Governor Ferguson argues in a Texas Good Roads address that supervising five miles of road is a greater statesman virtue than lengthy talk on referendums and recalls. He urges more highway statesmen to meet bond issue momentum and build better roads.
The Gazette lists subscribers who remitted payments since the last report. In a Saturday evening incident between the depot and Joe Macha's saloon two men died from buckshot wounds. Louis Blaine and Dave Howard were killed. Alert Lawson was arrested after fleeing with a shotgun. Inquests were held and Lawson was to be sent to Halletsville for district court.
Hallettsville Texas February 6 at the city council meeting salaries for city officers were fixed. The city marshal who is also assessor and collector of taxes receives 25 dollars per month plus 3 percent for assessing and 5 percent for collecting. The mayor gets 5 dollars per month plus 5 dollars for each regular meeting and 3.50 for each special meeting attended. Aldermen receive 3.50 per regular meeting and 1.50 per special meeting. The secretary earns 10 dollars per month and 3.50 per regular meeting. The attorney collects 3.50 per regular meeting and office fees from the corporation court.
The Twentieth Century Club held its regular meeting at Mrs. C B Welhausen home. Members listed include Wendtland Wolters Buske Amsler Hughs Thulemeyer Peck Wehausen Richter Trautwein Dittmar Hellman and others with visitors Fry Panton and Miss Dittmar. Substantial items covered life sketches of Helen Hunt Jackson and poets Jean Ingelow and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
A fine success with 140 dance tickets sold and about 1500 couples joining the grand match led by Mr. and Mrs. Peck Welhausen. Prizes for best masks awarded: Ladies first sunflower Miss Adele Meyer. second vegetable girl Miss Alma Sander. third fire bell Miss Lydia Stavinoha. Gents: first Woodman of World Harry Muecke. second clown Will Sain. third clown Adolph Wegner.
A satirical piece defining terms from law and court life. It lampoons lawyers, lawsuits, and the Supreme Court as a struggle between money and brains, portraying the legal system as a chessboard of technicalities and greed.
The Shiner Commercial Club met for a regular session last Thursday night. A road bond issue was discussed and a committee of speakers was named: J. C. Blohm, K. C. Merseburg er, and Louis Trautwein. An advertising committee was formed with E. J. Merrem, C. J. Garbade, and T. J. Ponton, plus president H. H. Striebeck. A third committee including Chas. Hirsch, E. Runk, O W. Miller, Frank Dolessi, J. H. Elsik, Hy. Teitjen, Prof. Ruppel, L. Wagener, and H. H. Striebeck will pick a panel to advise with Commissioner Wagener on using funds for road construction if the election goes ahead, which is expected to pass.
The Gazette announces the return of N. J. Hamilton as office foreman. Known as Nealy to friends, he has 25 years in printing and can handle all printing tasks in an up-to-date fashion. Mrs. Hamilton and daughter Elizabeth have arrived and occupy the Schumacher residence on avenue F.
Regulation requires counting and weighing mail on rural routes in January. Four FRAL routes handled 32,898 pieces of mail out of Shiney with a total actual weight of 4,281 pounds.
Friday morning at 8:30 Prof. T. J. Ponton presented a school program featuring the opening chorus Art Dawn by the high school girls reading The Pert Chicken by Joan May Striebeck piano solos Serenade by Victor Behubert Mamie Merseburger Dinkie the Hero Calf story by Warlyo Trautwein Mazurka by Les chetizey Mildred Fry and Concision of The Golden Fleece by Supt Ponton. Visitors for the event included Mesdames Schwab Gehrels Dierksen Striebeek Miller Herder C B Welhausen Joe Hughs Fry Thalemeyer Ponton Lockmann and Miss Hillmer.
The last session of the Shiner local teachers institute will convene at the high school Saturday February 27 at 10 o clock a m. Agenda includes resume of Chapter V Best Things in Our Schools by Miss Agnes Koniakovsky Chapter VII fame by T J Porton and Snow Bound Whittier read by Miss Frances Ledbetter.
The Eastern Star met in regular session Tuesday, disposed of routine business, then recessed until Wednesday night. On Wednesday, OC. M. Hughs and George Seydler were initiated into the Chapter.
Mr. A. J. Kallus pushes the proposed $200,000 bond issue for better roads into Shiner and promotes its approval, stressing the financial plan and community impact.
