Herman Wustenbart of Rt. 1 Moulton visited the Gazette office on Thursday to add his name to the subscriber list. He recalled living in Shiner when about ten years old.
Mayor Arthur H. Kaspar proclaims February 7 to 13 as Boy Scout Week in Shiner Texas and February 8 as Boy Scout Anniversary Day with February 9 observance. The proclamation notes the Boy Scouts of America vast reach, the Capitol Area Council's service, and the Breakthrough for Youth effort to expand access to Scouting.
The FHA sponsors a Valentine dance at Shiner High School Gym after the Shiner Moulton basketball game. All students from both schools and alumni are invited. Admission is 35 cents per couple and 25 cents for stags. Dance runs from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight.
The St Ludmila Academy and St Pauls PTC host a food sale on Saturday February 19 at Patek's Market downtown starting 9:00 a.m. Delicacies include bread strudel cakes pies kolaches noodles butter and old hens. Members with last names A through M are asked to contribute.
Lavaca County reports only one contested race in the Democratic primary held May 7 in Hallettsville with two candidates for justice of the peace precinct 1 incumbent Oscar Shoemake and Wilbert D Roznovsky filing by February 7. Other offices show multiple contenders at district and state levels including state representative 42nd district candidates J T Newman Cuero and Keith Markley Refugio and U S representative 23rd district candidates Randolph A Sherwood Von Ormy Abraham Kazen Jr Laredo Roy G Martin Cotulla. Incumbents pursuing re election include Gus J Strauss county judge Charles Strauss county clerk John E Kasper county treasurer E S Pat Kelly district clerk William A Eilers county superintendent John R Klimtich precinct 4 Henry Kocian precinct 2 plus others for a range of county posts. Rains seeks county surveyor and Hans retirement opens the county chairman post.
George F. Jiggs Ausec 54 of Yoakum died suddenly February 6 1966 after being stricken while playing golf. Survived by wife Hilda Locke Ausec son George H. Ausec daughters Rosalie Kelley Cheryl Ausec two grandchildren four sisters four brothers and other relatives. Funeral February 8 Buffington Chapel Yoakum Rev D I Dalton officiating burial Oak Grove Cemetery. pallbearers listed from Yoakum and Cuero.
A three night grain production short course will be held at the Hall lettsville County Court House February 15 16 and 17. Speakers from A&M University Extension Service include Ben Spears Wendell Horne Phil Hamman Charles Welch and Henry O Neal discussing varieties diseases insect control soil fertility harvesting and storage facilities. Merchants are urged to attend with farmers to boost local grain production.
Mrs. Robert Klaus of Harlingen passed away Tuesday February 8 in Harlingen. She was a former resident of this community and sister of Mrs. J. C. (Ella) Blohm of Shiner. Rites were pending at press time.
Notice urges Shiner Dance Club members to pay dues by February 28, with no late payments accepted. Members are instructed to mail dues or deliver them to First National Bank in Shiner. Also notes Rev and Mrs Edmund Deane returning Friday from Dallas after ministers school at SMU.
Henry W. Flessner died at his Cuero home January 25 1966 aged 82 years 6 months 11 days. He was a retired farmer previously with Guadalupe Valley Cotton Mills Cuero. Funeral January 27 at St Mark's Lutheran Church Cuero with burial in Westside Cemetery Yorktown. He born July 14 1883 in Oldenburg Germany emigrated 1891 to Weimar then Shiner area and later Yorktown Cuero Lindenau Garfield. Survived by wife Emma six children 17 grandchildren 19 great grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Bunjes Home Demonstration Club meets February 15 at 2 00 p m at Mrs Emma Werner’s home. District I ACCN holds its regular quarterly meeting February 15 at 7 30 p m at Our Lady of Refugio School Refugio. VFW and Ladies Auxiliary meet February 10 at 7 30 p m at the Post Home with a Valentine social to follow. attendees should bring lunch.
Alfred W. Stoeltje died January 31 1966 at Frank Wagner Memorial Hospital aged 69 years 5 months 10 days after a heart attack. He served in the U S Army 1918 1919 including Panama Canal Zone and married Alvina Sander in 1920. He was a longtime member of United Dr. Martin Luther Church Herman Sons and American Legion Kolar Stanek Post 201. Funeral services February 2 1966 at United Dr. Martin Luther Church with military rites. pallbearers and color guards listed. flag presented to his widow. He is survived by his wife two daughters a brother a sister and five grandchildren.
Mr. Felix Najvar of Halletts ville is a patient in Renger Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. He is the son in law of Mrs. Tillie Fietsam of Shiner.

Construction of a new bank vault to follow and an open house not yet scheduled.

Lavaca County reports 1965 poll tax issues totaling 3,434 with 45 exemptions and 3,479 overall. exemptions noted for 21 years. 1964 shows 2,888 issued with 12 exemptions and 2,900 total. 1963 records 4,434 issued with 91 misprint noted and 4,525 total. Through January 1966 the office collected 96.6 percent of the 1965 tax roll.
The Hallettsville Firemen sponsor their annual Valentine’s Dance on Saturday February 12 at the Hallettsville Recreation Hall. Music will be supplied by Jurecka’s Orchestra of Weimar. See act elsewhere in this issue.
Mrs Celia Modene Pustka died January 18 1966 in Bellaire General Hospital of breast cancer after treatment in McAllen and Houston. She was 40 and survived by husband Julius A Pustka son Michael and daughter Julie all of Houston. services held January 21 at Holy Ghost Church Shiner.
Vernon George Ellis 67 of 317 Asbury Houston died January 30 1966. Funeral services were held February 1 at Hyde Park Chapel and Saint Theresa Church with Rev George W Rhein officiating. Burial in South Park Cemetery. Pallbearers included Frank Howard L Spitzenberger Virgil Hinton Richard and Howard Bradley. Ellis was a American Legion Post 468 member.
St Paul girls basketball hosts Bishop Forest Schulenburg Thursday February 10 at 6:45 p.m. in the Parish Gym. Come out and cheer the team to victory.
Mrs Antonia Sebastian 87 of Prairie du Chien Wisconsin died Tuesday January 11 1966 Funeral services were held Friday January 14 at 10 00 am at St John s Catholic Church Prairie du Chien Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery She was born December 26 1878 in Bohemia and came to the United States in 1896 She married William Sebastian at St John s Church Survivors include her step children sisters and brothers with several named in Prairie du Chien and nearby areas The husband and several relatives preceded her in death
