The Shiner Comets, after a 36-32 win over Poth's Rusty Five, fell 53-51 to San Fernando of San Antonio in a tense, back and forth game. Marcak scored a backward basket by mistake, yet the team shows slow season emergence and growing fan support.
The Valentine Coronation and formal dance sponsored by the FHA Club are set for February 11. Shiner High class princesses Doris Henkhaus Gloria Ann Sommerlatte Adella Mikes and Martha Mayer compete by penny voting with the queen to be crowned at 4:00 p.m. Friday February 10.
Regular meeting of Shiner Chapter No 272 OES on February 14 at 7 pm. The Deputy Grand Matron will make her official visit. All members are urged to attend. Social hour follows. Ethel Hepler W M.
A meeting of the Business Men's Club is scheduled for tonight at 7 15 at Meyer's Modern Cafe. Members are reminded to attend and participate in the evening gathering with agenda items to discuss club affairs.
The new and modern cottage of Mrs. Gus Haslbeck is nearing completion. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Hagedorf and family will occupy it.
The Heart Campaign sponsored by Kolar-Stanek Post No 201 announces a free donation dance at Legion Park tonight Thursday Feb 9. Chamber of Commerce donates 15.00 to start the campaign and donations are accepted at First National Bank Shiner via Edgar Kram.
The Knights of Columbus host an open house tonight Thursday February 9 at 7 30 pm inviting all members and bringing guests. Msgr Beck is the guest speaker and his message is anxiously awaited with a record attendance anticipated.

The U S Army documentary The Nurenburg Trial will be shown Monday night February 13 at 7 30 o clock. Presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Shiner Catholic Parish Hall the screening is free to the public.
Funeral services were held for Gilmer Elliott Jake Bradley 59 longtime Gonzales County superintendent of schools. He died Sunday of a heart attack and is survived by wife Hattie Kellum Bradley and daughter Paule Genevieve Vallentine. Bradley served 29 years as county superintendent and was active in Masonic circles fire department and Lions Club.
The Shiner Polio Drive for the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis closed last Tuesday with a total of 3863.90 donated by local residents. The High School Band made its first appearance during a basketball game as Flatonia met Shiner in a packed gym. Shiner won 35 to 18 under Coach Max Seidenberger amid strong crowd support. Director Robert S. Taylor introduced the band between halves, presenting nine pieces that drew enthusiastic praise.
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold a meeting in the Chamber of Commerce room tonight Thursday February 9 at 7 30 p m.
The Blessed Virgin Mary Society will meet Sunday February 12 after the 8:00 AM Mass. Members are urged to attend.
City Secretary E W Stratman reports 597 poll taxes paid in Shiner by January 31, compared with 567 paid in 1949.

Funeral and bereavement note closes with a message of sympathy.

Scouts of Troops 231 and 232 held a pot-luck supper and Court of Honor at Legion Park to mark Scouting's 40th anniversary in America. The event featured Tenderfoot through First Class advancements, merit badges, demonstrations on artificial respiration, and a closing pledge by Dr. F M Wagner with a Liberty Crusade message.
Hugo Pohler rushed to Emil Kiesel’s burning tractor on Mrs. Chas Schindler’s farm on the city outskirts. He used a fire extinguisher to control the blaze and save the machine from total loss, with repairs hoped to restore it to service.
The City Cemetery Association held a Saturday food sale that drew strong patronage despite bad weather. Total receipts reached 177.15 dollars, including food sales and donations, with thanks extended to patrons, donors, and providers of food items.
The 40th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America runs February 6 to 12 with over 2.3 million participants. The 1950 Crusade to Strengthen the Arm of Liberty continues, Crusade Night awards are handed out, 12 Scouts will report to the nation in Washington, the ceremony at Independence Hall is planned, and the 1950 Second National Jamboree is scheduled for Valley Forge from June 30 to July 6 with 40,000 attendees. Since 1910, more than 16.5 million boys and men have been identified with the organization.
The Gazette congratulates Henry Strauss on taking ownership and publisher role at the La Grange Journal. He has long aspired to run his own publication and will expand circulation prestige and goodwill as former lessee of the Journal plant.
