The Lavaca County basketball tournament will be played in Yoakum on February 9 10 and 11 in a double elimination bracket. Shin er faces Hallettsville while Yoakum meets Komensky on Thursday night.
The Comanches defeated Yorktown and Luling in two series played last week. Scores: Shiner A 44 Yorktown 26 and Shiner B 40 Yorktown 14 and Shiner 32 Luling. The final Shiner game of 1939 will be against Yorktown on Monday night February 13.

Rev A Guyon will lead Methodist Church services this Sunday with morning worship at 10 am and a fellowship hour to follow at the church hall. The bulletin notes special prayers for community workers and a hymn sing after the service.
The Christian Science lesson sermon for Sunday February 12 at 11 a m will be read in all Churches of Christ Scientist. The Golden Text proclaims Lo this is our God we have waited for him and he will save us Isaiah 25 9.
The United Dr Martin Luther Church announces services in German and English with a Sunday School at 9 30 a m and Divine Service at 10 30 a m in German and 7 p m in English on Tuesdays 7 p m a monthly business meeting Thursdays 7 p m Brotherhood and social with lunch Fridays 7 30 p m 42 entertainment for the building fund Saturdays 2 p m instruction A new constitution was adopted last Sunday and regular contributions and signing in the church book are urged The third Sunday each month will be English service while the other Sundays are German Rev Richard Schuetze
English services held on the first Sunday each month at 3 00 pm and German services on the third Sunday at 10 30 am. Everyone is welcome at all gatherings. Pastor O C Schreiner signs the note with a Bible verse Luke 11 28.

Two Shiner High School debate teams attended Baylor University's tournament in Waco on Feb. 5 and 6 with about 600 Texas students. Senior teams defeated Grand Prairie Lavadas High and Brownwood. boys beat Beaumont and Brownwood. Teams rated superior and very good, plan to compete next at the University of Texas in Austin on Feb. 10 and 11 with Miss Hertha Liebhafsky.
Joe Berger informs the Gazette he has leased the Ford Service Station formerly run by Judge Lichey and is already operating it. He is remodeling and painting the building to improve its appearance, bringing experience to the business with expectations of success. He invites friends and the public to visit.
The Shiner high school girls beat Ellinger All-Stars 19 to 13 in their final home game of the season. Agnes Jurek was the standout, while seniors Agnes Jurek Stella Novak Ruby Fisseler Beth Howard Rubie Mae Stoeltje were honored. The team next plays Moulton in the County Tournament at Yoakum High School Gym.
Shiner Chapter No. 272 Eastern Star schedules regular meeting on February 14 at 7 p.m. All members are requested to attend. Alma Kempe, W. M.
G. E. Jaehne, Secretary of the Lavaca County ACA in Hallettsville Texas, lists crops deemed soil depleting for 1939 and defines the acreage considered as such. The list includes corn not for home use, tobacco, certain grain sorghums, cotton with early boll formation, sugar beets, sugarcane, rice, peanuts, broomcorn, various truck and vegetable crops, potatoes, canning peas and evergreens, wheat on wheat allotment farms, sweet sorghum, Sudan grass, millet, soybeans for seed, and summer fallow treated as erosion protection.
Regular meeting announced for Thursday at seven o'clock at Pohler's Cafe. Secretary treasurer asks luncheon members to come prepared to pay January dues.
The second year Home Economics class at Shiner High School sponsors a two act play titled Renovating Rosie. It will be staged with a children's style show in late February. Admission is 10 and 15 cents. All are welcome. Further notices will follow.
Claudette Colbert headlines the new Zaza featuring Herbert Marshall Bert Lahr and Helen Westley at the Palace Theatre for Sunday and Monday showings. The production promises lively entertainment with a celebrated cast in a classic stage presentation.

A school recital presents the Ex-Class play at the Auditorium at 7 45 pm on Wednesday February 15. Flossie is played by Thomas Nowlin and Howard. Eph is played by August Jr. Mrs Kellogg is the hostess and Irene Klos is the daughter. The cast includes Margaret Fitzsimmons Eunice Meyer Nell Gray Mary Castel and Keona Valek. The comedy follows a young couple in a social circle and ends with a surprising curtain reveal. Admission is free and open to the community.
An automobile collision near Hochheim left Mr and Mrs Don Hilton and Nelda Lynn Hilton injured. Teas suffered a broken arm rib nose and eye wound while Mrs Teas has a fractured leg. Mr Hilton broke a collar bone and injured knee with Mrs Hilton fracturing both pelvic bones. Nelda Lynn strained ligaments. All receive hospital care at Huth Memorial and Holmes hospital in Gonzales reports say Mahler rests better after a severe day with a badly broken leg.
The Lutheran Ladies Aid met February 1 at 2:30 p m with song and prayer. Rev Schuetze gave an instructive lecture on Japan to be continued next month. Mrs Aug Schramm presided. Minutes approved. Lunch with coffee at Luther Hall followed. Rev Walter spoke and led closing prayer. Next meeting March 1 at 2:30 p m. Reporter
A Valentine feature spotlight for fathers, Kuhn Pharmacy presents Jed Buell's Midgets in The Terror of Tiny Town a western packed with action comedy and music at the Palace Theatre Friday and Saturday.
Mr and Mrs Rudy Hangs of Midway mourn the loss of their infant daughter Lorene born January 8 who passed February 4. The infant was laid to rest at Shiner City Cemetery Sunday at 2 30 p m with Rev R Schuetze conducting the rites. The poem in memory recalls her sweetness and heavenly refrain.
W. J. Wanier aged 41 years 8 months 8 days died Friday February 3 in Runge at 1 30 PM after heart pains. Military funeral by Yorktown American Legion Post drew large crowd. Former Shiner Gazette employee survived by parents two brothers and three sisters. Local attendees listed.
J Howard Baldwin 81 longtime educator and owner of Baldwin Business College Yoakum died after a short illness in Cuero. He was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery after a Beck Chapel service led by Rev Walter Lipps. Born 1857 in Richmond Indiana he promoted penmanship and translated a New Testament into Spanish. Surviving are widow Mary Ann Baldwin six children and several stepchildren with thirty grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Pallbearers included Oak McKenzie Jr Boyd Baldwin B B Russell E S Harnden Jr Lyall Maxwell and Lauren Baldwin.

The Shiner Fire Department welcomed guests from Yoakum Moulton and Hallettsville for a School of Instruction led by Mr. Williams from Texas A&M Firemen Training School College Station. He demonstrated modern firefighting methods with reels before a luncheon and social at the American Legion Hall.
On February 1 a deal became effective whereby Ad Seidenberger took charge of the Gulf Service Station by acquiring J J Barta interest. Seidenberger, formerly at J J Adamek Grocery, is well known locally. Barta has not announced future plans.
J. M. Canon, city and school tax collector, reports strong collections though conditions remain challenging. About 93 percent of city taxes and just over 90 percent of school taxes have been paid, with 421 poll taxes collected versus 417 last year.
There will be a meeting in Moulton on Wednesday February 15 for the purpose of giving farmers all information pertaining to the 1939 F Program. The meeting will start about 7 30 p m at the School House. G E Jaehne secretary Lavaca County ACA Hallettsville Texas.

Mr and Mrs Richard H Hopper of Galveston announce the birth of a baby boy named Richard Lee at John Sealy hospital on Thursday January 26. The infant weighs 6 pounds. Mrs Hopper is Emily Picha. This is the couple's first child.
D C Daniel thanks Dr. Wagner and hospital staff for care during his week as a patient. He expresses gratitude to old friends for flowers visits and kindness. He, with Mrs. Daniel and their children, sends heartfelt blessings to all who extended courtesies.
J. J. Barta notifies patrons that on February 1 he disposed of his interest in the Gulf Filling Station to Ad. Seidenberger a former employee of J. J. Ada mek Jr. He thanks patrons for support and wishes success to his successor noting his service and strong Gulf Oil sales honors in 1938.
