The Garden Club will showcase Technicolor pictures The Famous Gardens at the gymnasium Friday February 9 at 7 30 p m Admission 5 and 10 cents with a talk on gardening by Mrs Conselyea of Houston Proceeds benefit the Shiner Garden Club.
The Shiner Business Men's Club holds its regular meeting tonight at Meyer's Modern Cafe, starting promptly at 7 o'clock.

Christian Science services announce the Sunday sermon topic Spirit to be read in all churches at 11 a.m. The Golden Text cites John 4 24 God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. A citation from Romans 8 9 follows: Ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if the Spirit of God dwell in you.
The Emanuel Lutheran Church holds English services on the first Sunday of each month at 3:00 pm and German services on the third Sunday. All are welcome to hear God’s word, quoting John 8 47.
Houston's Little Theatre staged Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick to a full house last week. The rural comedy follows Aaron Slick and a crooked speculator Wilbur Merridew with a supporting cast including Clarence Green and Mrs Rose Berry. Proceeds go to the High School P T A as rehearsals continue in Shiner for an upcoming benefit performance.
Mr and Mrs Frank Svoboda welcomed their first child a 11 lb boy named James Alois born February 2 with mother formerly Miss Justine Pusixa and sponsors Mr and Mrs August Svoboda. Mr and Mrs Arthur Darilék also welcomed a 10 lb boy named Matthew born February 6.
On January 30, 1890, Joe Panus and Miss Agnes Benes united in marriage in Czechoslovakia. Surrounded by their children, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on January 30, 1940. They moved to America in 1906 and settled near Shiner, living in town since 1926. A dinner, supper, and dance followed, with the Panus Band playing and all wearing golden flowers. Four children are listed: Teresia Mikes, Annie Mach, Christina Kolacny, and Frank Panis, with 28 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The Gazette extends best wishes for many more healthy years.
Herbert Liebhafsky of Shiner, son of Mr and Mrs Hugo Liebhafsky and a student at A and M College, is appointed regimental captain of the Field Artillery. Congratulations to Herbert on this advancement.
To Fayette Electric Co-Op and Guadalupe Valley Electric Cooperative members, REA and your cooperative present a traveling exhibit, the REA Electric Farm Equipment Show. Free admission on February 8 and 9, 1940, at the Tynus Frank Farm ten miles south of LaGrange on Highway 77.
The Konecny family thanks friends neighbors and mourners for flowers prayers and comforting messages during their bereavement. Special thanks go to Rev E Bily Sisters Chair Drs Williams and Wagner hospital nurses and all who attended the last rites. Your sympathy is cherished.
Friends gathered for the last rites of Leon Konecny at Shine Catholic Church after his death at the local hospital on January 31. Rev E Bily led the high mass and sermon, with pallbearers and family sorrow noted. Survived by parents, two brothers and a sister, the Gazette offers sympathy.
Emil Anders died January 31 at about age 60 after a two week illness. Funeral services were conducted February 1 at 10 a.m. at Eschenburg Funeral Parlors with Rt. Rev. Mons. Nettardus in charge. Burial followed in City Cemetery. Pallbearers included Robert, Gordon and Melvin Anders, Emil Dreyer, Jesse and Elton Ling. Survivors list one brother Id Anders of La Grange and ten nephews and seven nieces. The deceased resided in Lavaca and Fayette Counties most of his life and spent his final years with his nephew Alfred Dreyer near Shiner. The community offers sympathy to the mourners.
A Tuesday night gathering of the Shiner Farmers League Branch drew fair attendance. The chairman reviewed the Fayetteville convention proceedings and urged all farmers and supporters to join for betterment. Dues of 50 cents a year, including the Farmers League Gazette, were collected and committees will be appointed for the year.
A Soil Conservation Service expert reports 60 percent plus of cultivated land in the Lavaca and Guadalupe river watersheds has lost 25 to 75 percent of topsoil. He cites factors such as overgrazing, lack of cover crops, single crop cotton, steep land cultivation, poor terrace maintenance and inadequate crop rotation as major causes, noting most erosion occurred in the past 50 to 60 years.
The article lists major soil and water conservation practices to correct erosion, stressing combined use. It highlights retirement of erodible areas to pasture, sodding, fencing, controlled grazing, weed control, contour furrowing, strip cropping, crop rotation, terracing, meadow waterways, protected terrace outlets, gully control, and wildlife protection. The nations 1 330 000 Cubs Boy Scouts and leaders will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the incorporation of the Boy Scouts of America in a week long observance beginning Thursday February 8. The theme Scouting The American Way echoes how the Patrol method and group action teach citizenship with democratic decisions. Radio will link Scouts nationwide culminating in a White House broadcast February 8 with President Roosevelt and Walter W Head. Reverence Day Sunday February 11 will feature Scouts in church services. over half of US Cub Packs and Scout groups are church sponsored.

The local hospital reports current patients including Joe Zamazal, Mrs James Buske, John Siegel, Mrs Albert Caka, Mrs Frank Svodba, Shiner, Louis Gosch, Fl tonia, Marland Jones, Gonzales. Dismissed patients include Mrs Clinton Voelkel, Shiner, Joan Bartosch, Moulton.
A community received 1.40 inches of rain on Monday accompanied by small hail thunder and lightning. The showers brought beneficial moisture and likely eased drought conditions. The severe weather contained brief thunder and flashes of lightning across the region.
The Farmers League of America held its 3rd annual convention in Fayetteville from February 1 to 3. Officers were elected including Theo A. Golsch as president and E J Schilling as vice president. The group adopted resolutions on AAA policy, tax proposals, truck load limits, cotton bale standards, and cooperative actions to boost American cotton consumption.
The Texas Game Commission and Boy Scouts present free wildlife films at 7:30 showing scenes of native birds animals and scenery. The program aims to educate Texans about the state's abundant wildlife resources and includes close‑ups of various species.

Milton Otto and Regina Mican were married at the Catholic Rectory in Hallettsville on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Rev. F. O. Beck officiated. Attendants were Buena Lee Otto and Charles Mican. The couple plans to reside in the Trautwein Apartment after a honeymoon trip, and family and Gazette readers extend congratulations.
A pretty wedding occurred at Ganado Catholic Church on Monday February 5 at 9 oclock Miss Rose Kalivoda became the bride of Joe Pokluda. Witnesses were Steve Pokluda and Eddie Hirsch. The bride wore a white taffeta floor length dress with wreath veil and a bouquet of white lilies and Boston fern. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs John Kalivoda of Ganado. The groom is the son of Mr and Mrs Ludwig Pokluda. A wedding dinner followed at the bride’s parents home for immediate relatives. The newlyweds will make their home in Canada with the bride’s parents.
