The Shiner Independent School District sets April 6 1974 as election day to fill three expiring trustee terms. Candidates must file by midnight March with the superintendent using required forms. Incumbents Brian Helweg Oscar Buesing and J Jack Cloutier term endings prompt the ballot.
Plans for the 14th annual SLA St Paul Science Hobby Show on March 3 are announced. St Paul High School and St Ludmila's Academy junior high will present over 150 projects in the parish gym, with grade school entries limited to displays. A judging team led by Dean O A Parks with Victor Michalk and colleagues will award ribbons and savings bonds to top projects.
The fifth annual Old Timers Baseball Association reunion will be Sunday March 17 1974 at Blase's Place Highway 90 A East between Shiner and Hallettsville. A large crowd from eighteen counties is expected with a program and banquet. Certificates will be presented to OTBA Hall of Fame inductees and 1973 SCTAL champions New Ulm Firemen will receive a special trophy. Deadline for 1974 Hall of Fame entries extended to March 1.
Open House on January 6 1973 celebrated the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department new station on Avenue D. The article traces the department history from its 1893 organizing meeting, naming Ernst Wangemann as first chief and listing early officers and prominent local founders.

Otto Robert Koliba of Yoakum died January 31 1974 at Hermann Hospital Houston after a lengthy illness at age 53. Funeral held February 2 at St Joseph Catholic Church with burial in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Survived by wife Marie two daughters Lana Ann and Bonnie two stepdaughters three sons five sisters three brothers and three grandchildren. Rosary noted February 1 at Buffington Funeral Home Chapel Yoakum.
Rudolph J Roeder of Schulenburg dies at Youens Memorial Hospital Weimar after a heart attack at home He was 70 years 7 months 22 days The funeral at St Paul United Church of Christ Schulenburg Sunday January 27 at 2 pm with burial in Schulenburg City Cemetery Pallbearers include E W Pfeil Jr and other relatives Survived by daughter Dalleys Ramey son in law John Ramey of Baton Rouge LA and one granddaughter and a great granddaughter
Mr and Mrs Thomas Berger of Houston announce the birth of their baby boy Douglas Neal on Friday January 25 1974 at Houston General Hospital. He weighed seven pounds one ounce and is welcomed by two sisters Janice eight and Debra five.
Mrs. Har ry C. Staats nee Marian Gerdes of San Antonio died January 29 1974 at Baptist Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness age 60 years 11 months 22 days. Funeral services were February 1 at Alamo Chapels San Antonio with Rev Norman H. Albertson of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Concluding services were at Sunset Memorial Park. She is survived by her husband Harry C. Staats daughter Mrs Ed Urbanek son Clifford H Staats eight grandchildren sister Mrs Annie Balusek and brother E J Gerdes. She was active in community groups and had worked in insurance for over 20 years.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Katrina Lopez of Yoakum arrived Friday February 1 1974 at the Shiner Hospital. Weight was 7 pounds 2 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vincik of Shiner and Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Berger of Schulenburg. Great grandparents include Mrs. Ludmila Du sek and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Vincik of Shiner and Edmund Kloesel of Schulenburg.
The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department held its oyster supper on Friday January 25 1974 at City Hall. Fire Chief Bennie Simper awarded service pins for 5 to 30 years and presented a bronze plaque to Wilbur Minear for 22 years as chief. Memorial prayers were offered for two deceased members.
Miss Clara Ruhmann died January 30 1974 at Colonial Nursing Home Nixon at age 88. Funeral services were held January 31 in Shiner with burial in Shiner City Cemetery. She lived in Shiner Yoakum and Nixon areas and was a longtime Methodist member with many relatives in the Ruhmann family.
The First National Bank will be closed all day Monday February 18 1974 in observance of Washingtons Birthday.
Jimmy C. Lloyd Sr. of Shiner has been appointed district manager for Combined American Insurance Company in Dallas. He will supervise sales managers and representatives serving policyholders, with services every six months. Lloyd joined Combined American in 1966 and is a member of the W. Clement Stone International Sales and Management Achievement Club.
A Social Security Office representative from Victoria will be at Shiner City Hall at 9 00 Friday February 15 1974 to assist and file retirement survivor disability or medicare claims and answer questions about the program.
Mrs John Agnes Petru age 87 died February 1 1974 at Trinity Lutheran Home Shiner. Funeral arrangements listed Buffington Funeral Home Shiner with Rosary February 2 and Holy Mass February 3 at Shiner Catholic Church. Interment followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
Mrs Mary Jalufka nee Mary Fikac died February 3 1974 at 10 40 p m in Shiner Hospital aged 56 years 5 months 29 days Buffington Funeral Home Shiner held viewing February 5 7 30 p m and services February 6 at St Marys Catholic Church Interment in St Marys Catholic Cemetery Rt 4 Hal.
Observed visiting periods 7 00 to 7 30 am 10 00 to 11 00 am 2 00 to 4 00 pm 7 00 to 8 30 pm list of patients by city and names with dismissals including several mothers and newborns.

Theo Rogge was admitted to Citizens Memorial Hospital in Victoria on February 6 for surgery preparation.
