The Kolar Stanek Post 201 American Legion of Shiner Texas extends gratitude for support at the Polio Fund dance. The event yielded a net contribution of 154.05 to polio relief, reflecting the Legion’s ongoing community service and appreciation to friends and patrons.
Funeral rites were held for Mrs. John Kubicek Sr. at Shiner Catholic Church after her death on February 5 1952 at age 84 years 7 months and 9 days. She lived with her daughter in Moulton and Shiner and was survived by three children two sisters and six grandchildren. Burial followed at Shiner Catholic Cemetery with Requiem High Mass.
The Infan tile Paralysis Fund drive in Shiner closed January 31 surpassing its 800 goal with contributions totaling 1141.84. Funds will go to Lavaca County headquarters for the March of Dimes. Committee members Alvin Boehm Edwin Boehm Lee Sedlmeyer Max Wolters and Dr J W Connolly thank all donors.
The Shiner Catholic Church members contributed to the Polio Drive with a collection totaling $125.78 this week. The amount was added to the fund after last Sunday's collection.
Scouts from Troops 231 and 232 express thanks for civic cooperation in their scrap paper drive. They report turning in 52.10 to the Polio Drive.
Mrs. Henry Bolech reports from San Antonio that Leonette Bolech, polio victim, has improved. In a telephone update she learned Leonette could stay out of the iron lung for over 18 hours on Monday and is now able to take solid foods by mouth.
Otto Carl Riske a longtime resident of the Henkhaus area died suddenly at his home Monday morning January 28 after a heart attack. Funeral services were at Zion Lutheran Church Moulton on Tuesday January 29 with interment in Moulton City Cemetery. He was born July 13 1876 at Cat Spring Texas and was 75 years 6 months and 15 days old. He married Emilie Bengsch October 24 1901 who died July 30 1951. Surviving are son Milton and granddaughter Iris Riske. The Rev Stanley J Petry officiated with casket attendants including grandsons and relatives.
Santa Claus spirit marked the weekend as Shiner received a new 14800 fire truck donated by the city for the Shiner Volunteer Fire Department. Firemen greeted the vehicle with holiday cheer and rode it as it toured the town with siren active. Demonstrations are planned this weekend with a full story promised next week.
John Bohman suffered a heavy loss Sunday afternoon as wind driven flames from a yard fire exploded gasoline and coal oil in his garage. The Shiner Volunteer Fire Department saved the home but the barn with 500 bushels of corn 100 bales of peanut hay and a tractor was a total loss. Estimated damage around 6000 with little insurance.
Mrs. F. M. Ressler 67 of the Sweet Home area died January 30 at Yoakum hospital following a stroke that left her paralyzed on the left side. Funeral services were held February 1 from Buffington Funeral Home with a Requiem Mass at Sweet Home Catholic Church and burial in Sweet Home Cemetery. Survivors include her husband F. M. Ressler, three sons Frankie Jimmy and Johnny, a daughter Mrs. Alex Janak, two sisters, a brother, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services for Agnes Lahodny 77 were held at Roeder Funeral Home and Shiner High Mass. She died February 2 at her son in law and daughter's home. Survives include five daughters, one son, 20 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren. Burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery.
Rev S R Horwood starts six sermons on the book of Acts on Sunday night February 10 at 7 30. The W S C S study invites all church members and friends to read the gospel to understand the scripture text and notes the new 7 30 evening time.
Fire department members discussed new penalties for blocking fire crews and warned violators. They plan to issue penalties for false alarms and urge the public to stay away from scenes. A blinker light proposal at Shiner Motor Sales and Highway 95 could slow oil truck traffic in the business district.
The Shiner community mourns pioneer William Wendtland Sr. 95 who died January 31 after a lengthy illness. His body lay in state at Roeder Funeral Home and at home before a February 2 funeral with Rev. Horwood and Rev. A Guyon officiating. Interment was in Shiner City Cemetery. He arrived from Rogasen, Prussia in 1872 and built a life as a blacksmith and farmer, leaving a large local legacy.
