Mrs Katerine Hucek 90 2 25 died January 31 in Roeder home. Born in 1862 in Czechoslovakia she came to America in 1881 settling in Sweet Home. Survived by daughter Mary Roeder sister Vlasak brothers Dolezal ten grandchildren five great grandchildren funeral February 2 at Shiner Catholic Church.

Lavaca District CAP Council BSA plans a February 7 scouting exposition at the Barn High School Gym Yoakum to showcase crafts and skills from Troop 231 and Pack 231. Admission is 25 cents for ages over twelve and no long speeches are planned. Volunteers and local leaders urge support and attendance. The same week the March of Dimes drive in Lavaca County aims to exceed $10,000 with house to house and church campaigns, benefiting Shiner polio fund through community efforts.

A family near Lonnie Koenning’s home faced a near tragedy when a bolt struck a nearby tree during a storm. The strike felled Koenning and injured him and his wife and infant, while a cow was shocked but revived after being presumed dead. Charles V. Mladenka Sr., 61, of 4408 La Branch St. Houston, died at 4 45 a m Tuesday from lung cancer. He had worked 35 years in the Texas Company sales accounting department and lived in Houston 38 years. He was born in Schulenburg and survived by his widow, son Charles Jr., four daughters, his father John Mladenka, four sisters and a brother, with burial in Garden of Gethsemani Houston.

Saturday about 5 30 p m Mrs Isabel Thulemeyer and Elson Roy Schreiber of Rt 1 collided near the corner of the old Commercial Hotel site. LCRA Powers Shiner Town After Connection
LCRA power began serving the City of Shiner on Sunday after the noon hour when Shiner Municipal Light Plant was connected to the grid. Weeks of prep work preceded the switch as the town’s motors and the Sulphur Park area old equipment cooled for the first time in years. Nearby residents adjusted to the quiet now that the hum of machinery ceased.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Elizabeth Wendel Schmidt 43 of San Antonio. She died in a crash Sunday seven miles north of New Braunfels on Highway 81. Her husband H. L. Schmidt and two children were hospitalized with injuries. The family’s daughter Marion 14 and son Leonard 17 sustained injuries and Ronald 11 stayed with grandparents in San Antonio.
