Jos Muras local chairman announces Shiner lags in donations and extends the March of Dimes drive for one more week. Citizens may place offerings in town jars with no personal solicitations. He says the current total is a pittance and urges greater generosity from the community.
Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent with Holy Mass at 8:00. Blessed ashes distributed after Mass. Ember Days fall on all Wednesdays and Fridays, plus Feb 21 and March 27. Lenten devotions 7:15 on Wednesdays and Fridays. Czech services Wednesday nights and English devotions Friday nights led by Father John J. Hanacek.

Loretta Turner 21 of Yoakum died in Yoakum hospital after a February 1 highway crash near Shiner on Highway 95. The car, driven by Frank Valis of near Shiner, rolled after a tire blowout injuring Turner, who died in the early hours of February 3. Funeral plans await word from relatives.
The Blessed Virgin Mary Society will hold its regular monthly meeting after the 7 30 Mass on Sunday February 8. All members are urged to attend.
A tomato meeting is set for February 5 1948 at 7 30 p m in the Hallettsville courthouse to discuss problems in tomato production. A program covering every phase of the industry is planned and the event was postponed earlier due to bad weather. All interested are invited.
Texaco announces its office headquarters are now at Temple Lumber Company. The telephone number remains 77 and calls are answered there. All customers with business with the Texaco office staff are asked to come to the new location, signed by E. J. Kempe.
Chamber members urged to attend tonight as the first meeting of 1948 discusses yearly projects. January’s holiday caused a missed meeting, making this gathering the first since New Year’s Day.

Gonzales high flying cage squad edged Shiner V. F. W. 27 to 23 after trailing 15 11 at halftime. Fast second half defense and sharp shooting sealed the win. Shiner faces Yoakum at Yoakum Gym tonight.
Miss Margie Balusek and Leroy Hagendorf united in holy wedlock at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Shiner Catholic Rectory with Rev. J J Hanacek officiating. The couple, both Shiner High graduates, had worked in Houston before their wedding. A moved supper was held at the Hagendorf home due to bad weather.
After several weeks away due to illness, Rev. W L Hightower will deliver the morning and evening messages at the Methodist Church on Sunday. Communion will be observed at the 11 o'clock Sunday morning service.
Mr and Mrs E N Kasper received a notice from Brooke General Hospital that their son Milton was very ill. He was taken to San Antonio on Saturday with his father, his sister Mrs Wilma Reigart and Miss Mary Lee Fietsam driving the ambulance. Friends hope for better news.
Mrs. Pustejovsky nee Antonino Chovanetz born January 17 1859 in Silesia Czechoslovakia came to America with her parents in 1866 endured a sea voyage died January 31 1948 in Moravia Texas age 89. Her husband died eleven years earlier and thirteen children survive along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Hajek home in Moulton with interment in the family plot. a large crowd attended amid flowers and hymns.
William Darilek 103 oldest and respected Lavaca County citizen died in his sleep at the farm near Henkhaus. Funeral at Oehl Funeral Home Moulton with Mass at St. Josephs. Interment Moulton Catholic Cemetery. Survived by six sons, one daughter, 25 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren.
Shiner Chapter No 272 of the Order of the Eastern Star will hold a regular session on Tuesday night February 10 at seven oclock. Members are expected to attend.

Miss Theokla Bass of Houston and Elmer Flint Schulze of Houston wed at First Methodist Church Houston with Rev Richey officiating. Attendants included Collis Bradt and Reginald Hancock. The bride wore a palomino suit. the groom a brown suit. The couple will live in Houston pending a Bellaire home completion.
Ned Dreyer's Aberden Angus won first in heavy weight and was named reserve champion in the boys Angus division at the Houston Fat Stock Show. The calf had earlier won light weight class at the State Fair in Dallas in October. Johnnie Turk Jr. took twentieth in the medium Hereford class, the largest Such class ever seen. Ned and Johnnie, Shiner boys, trained in F F A in Yoakum schools.
The local Dance Club will meet Friday night February 6 at 8 oclock at Blucher Park.
