Houston Chronicle reports only 10 000 poll taxes unpaid with three days remaining before the city election and primary. Harris County has about 20 000 eligible voters, with roughly half qualified. Tax Collector Karl Druesden races to process filings as the deadline nears.
An involuntary bankruptcy petition against Simpson Bank of Columbus Texas was filed with the U S court clerk by three creditors claiming 7622 27 in deposits. Owners French Simpson and Carey Shaw allegedly insolvent with Miller operating the bank under an October 16 1914 assignment. The petition asserts the owners made an act of bankruptcy.
On Thursday night the Welhausen family hosted a surprise open house for Carl Welhausen’s fifteenth birthday. WHpworth League members entered with chaperones guiding a memorable parlor entrance as Carl solved geometry and music filled the air. Prizes went to Walter Schmidt for most games and Adolph Richter in consolation as guests enjoyed sandwiches and hot chocolate.
A local program lists student performers including Farndole and a mental solo by Linnie Dreyer Juanita Alma Muecke and Rose Rose for the Spring concert. Teachers Mrs Mittanck and Mrs Gehrels oversee acts with several names like Stella Belmers Iver and T J Ponton among participants.

A good roads election held last Monday in Yoakum Hochheim approved a $50,000 bond issue by a large majority. Yoakum 94 for 18 against, Hochheim 21 for 0 against, Hochheim Prairie 32 for 21 against. Overall majority for roads totals 108.
The 185 million cotton loan fund backed by banks nationwide will end February 1 as the Federal Reserve Board notes only about 12 thousand dollars was drawn. Critics say red tape strangled the program and urge cotton growers to rely on themselves rather than government aid.
The Gazette announces a charity children's Mask Ball at the Opera House on Saturday night February 20. Proceeds go to the Civic Club.
Beeville Texas January 30 posses scour the woods in western Bee and Live Oak counties searching for a Mexican tenant and his son who fled after shooting Ernest Kinkler at his house during a settlement attempt. The pair are armed and on foot.
Brainerd Minnesota January 27 Judge W S McClenahan ruled in district court that negroes have no civil rights in Sunday schools Mary C Marshall a 16 year old negress sued officers of an Aitkin Minnesota church for discrimination by seating apart from whites The judge said no legislative body has included churches in civil rights acts and courts cannot dictate church conduct avoiding legality concerns
The Hochheim Prairie Mutual Fire and Storm Insurance Association, a long standing Texas mutual, reports 1914 in force insurance of 3,037,099 with a net yearly rise near 400,000. Losses paid 5,752.55 and total disbursements 7,270.09 against income of 11,303.05 yielding a net profit around 4,000. The organization, founded 1892 with its head at Hochheim, lists 24 branches and about 3200 members.
The regular monthly gathering of the Mothers Club will take place in the School Auditorium on February 11, 1915. The program features two talks on animal stories by Mrs. Adolf Richter and Mrs. O. C. Dittmar. All members are urged to attend. visitors are welcome.
Opposition grows against a $200,000 bond issue in Shiner precinct though results from Yoakum and Hochheim suggest the measure will pass with likely approval.
