A large number of stockholders met in an all day session last Monday in the Shiner Opera House building. John H. Elsik presided with Secretary Henry J. Ehlers at the desk. Much interest was shown. a full account will appear in the Gazette next issue.
John W. Janak a leading Wied resident died at home Tuesday at 3 40 pm after illness. He was 60 years 8 months and 18 days old. Funeral from St Marys Church followed a Requiem Mass offered by Rev D A Sykora with burial in St Marys Cemetery. He served as Wied school trustee for about 20 years and was active in the K J T Society. Surviving are seven sons and three daughters, plus siblings and 28 grandchildren.
The Shiner Volley Ball Girls coached by Miss Alf Christian lost 3 to 0 to Charlottenburg on Thursday. Charlottenburg defeated by Hallettsville Brahmas 27 to 18 in a basketball game the previous Wednesday with Cortez scoring 14 points. Lubitsch film Trouble in Paradise shown at Palace Theatre Sunday and Monday.
Mr. Frank Turk is staying at the Government hospital in San Antonio for a broken leg he sustained last October. He is recovering as well as could be expected after an operation.
The Business Men's Club met in regular session at the Blohm building last Thursday night. Mayor Richter presided in the absence of President Denmark and Vice President Waldrep, praising the Ladies Aid Society for a salad course. Bargain Day was discussed, and how to adjust methods of the Reconstruction Finance Committee was reviewed. A letter from Busch Selzer Diesel Manufacturing Co. seeking cooperation against government price competition was sent to the Chamber of Commerce. The group adjourned after advancing the printing competition issue.
The Tulsa Texas Herald condemned a legislative measure allowing the state prison printing plant to bid on state contracts. It warned that tax-funded facilities would compete with private printers, undermining free enterprise and disturbing fair competition. The piece likened the plan to government printing of return addresses, arguing it would shepherd taxpayers into supporting a favored industry. It urged rejection as contrary to constitutional government and free enterprise.
The Lavaca County Taxpayers League will hold its first general meeting of the new year in Hallettsville on Saturday at 2 oclock in the county courthouse. A committee meeting last Saturday included Mr Trautwein from Shiner who says income and sales tax will be discussed with Senator Russekl and Rep Devall expected to attend. All members and interested friends are urged to attend.
Contractor E W Sonntag and crew including Steve Pustka Paul and Steve Pokluda Joe Tronicek Edgar Glatzert Mother Augustine of St Ludmila s Academy and Victor Matula of Hallettsville returned last week from Boerne. Sonntag said the Rest Cottage was completed and that local labor helped on the project since October 1. They enjoyed the Boerne climate but were glad to be home. More particulars of the building will be given next week.
The church invites the public to Sunday services on February 5 at 11 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. for the first sermon by Rev. R. Steinhoff of Dallas as pastor. The community is urged to attend.

At last week’s Civic League annual meeting all existing officers were re elected. President Elo Wolters, Vice President C B Welhausen, Secretary Peck Welhausen and Treasurer A L Valek were all retained.

The assembly on January 26 featured a play Midget Grand Parade. Third Grade under Miss Dreyer presented vocal solos by Mr. Butte and a group including Buenah Lee Otto Maxine McElroy Adela Mueller Albert Hirsch Gilbert Kasper and others with Mr. Butte as coach. Group singing closed the program.
