Clergymanreceives two year term for assault charge

Gonzales Texas January 24 On a charge of assault with intent to commit criminal assault upon a 17 year old girl Father A A Huebsch was found guilty by a jury and sentenced to two years. Five more charges remain with one set for January 31. The case began last year with the jury report listing Cheapside residents among others and the defense was led by local attorneys while District Attorney H Duncan was assisted by W T Bagby.

South Texas Banks Unite To Loan on Live Stock

Yoakum Texas January 29 Banks in sixteen South Texas towns form the Bankers Finance Corporation of South Texas to loan cattlemen. Officers named KH Wolters president M C Driscoll vice president Phillip Welhausen treasurer all from Yoakum State Bank. Applicants pay ten percent of the loan amount. if approved the note is endorsed and funds are lent by the member banks.

Rev A L Scarborough Dies in Cuero Heart Trouble

Cuero Texas January 25 Rev A L Scarborough presiding elder of the Cuero district in the Methodist Episcopal Church died suddenly at his home this morning from heart trouble after recent illness. He arose as usual and kindled the fires before becoming ill. a physician was summoned but he passed about thirty minutes later.

Gonzales Texas January 29 tax collector S D McVea reports tax payments are slow with over 7 500 polls in the county but only about 3 100 paid to last night. Officials anticipate roughly 5 500 poll taxes issued in the county.

Attempt to Rob Sweet Home Bank in Yoakum

About 4 o'clock this morning an attempt to rob the Valenta Bros. Bank at Sweet Home was made. The vault combination was broken with tools stolen from a blacksmith shop. Explosives were used but failed. The robbers, failing to blow the safe, took about $50 and two pistols from the store housing the bank.

Mrs Francis Schraer Dies After Sudden Illness at 58

Mrs Francis Schraer wife of Jos Schraer of this city died at home Monday January 23 at 3 PM from heart failure after a period of illness. She was 58 born in Columbus Texas married in 1883 at Prada Fayette County. Survived by husband nine children four sons Henry Ben Paul Albert three daughters Mesdames Joe Schmidt Jr Joe Seidenberger and Josephine and many grandchildren. Remains buried in Catholic Cemetery after services conducted by Father F X Wolf. family expresses heartfelt sympathy.

Yoakum Texas January 28 The New Crown stock of dry goods formerly owned by A F Mac Donald was sold at public auction today. J D Callahan of Victoria Tex bought the business for 1780 dollars 25 cents. The sale was conducted by W F Adams Jr trustee.

Death of Pope Benedict Emphasizes Vatican Pneumonia Death

Pope Benedict, head of the Catholic Church, died of pneumonia in Rome early Saturday after rapid illness. Interment is planned for Wednesday or Thursday, with election of his successor set for February 2. Memorial services are being held in Catholic churches worldwide.
