Evolution of the Christmas Carol Through History
The carol's roots trace to medieval carole dances in France and evolving lyrics with Latin phrases. St Francis of Assisi fostered nativity displays in 1223, leading to mystery plays and Noel songs. Luther popularized congregational singing, and December 25 became celebrated as Christ's birth since the 300s.
