Aug 23 will be a history making day as amendments and education issues hinge on the vote. In the Ninth District a successor to the late Judge Mansfield will be named from eight candidates. Also the 18th district state senate seat is decided with other special elections statewide.
A large gathering of Shiner Business Men's Club met at the Fish and Game Recreation grounds for a barbecue supper and officer elections. Wilbur Minear was elected President with Lee J. Sedlmeyer as vice president and W. G. Stindt re elected secretary and treasurer. C J Waldrep spoke on canceling passenger service of the S P Railroad but no definite report from the State Railroad Commission in Austin. Civic improvements were discussed but no action approved.
The Board of Education announces three new school busses for student transfers to Shiner High School. Three routes will serve Sunset Michna Beasley and Charlottenburg districts with Evergreen graduates also moving to Shiner. Bus schedules and drivers will be announced next week per Supt. Neil Rasco.
Supt. Neil Rasco announced acoustical tiles installed in the gymnasium reduce reverberation to 1.5 seconds. Floors and bleachers have been resurfaced and the improved acoustics are praised as a long sought community center asset benefiting speech and singing programs.
Texas adopts a uniform traffic code effective September 5, tightening pedestrian right of way at crosswalks and requiring side walks, right side driving, regulated passing, enhanced stop sign rules, dimmed headlights, and deadly driving penalties. Drivers must report accidents within 24 hours and vehicles must have functioning lights brakes and horns.
Austin August 13. State Superintendent L A Woods issued strict bus safety rules covering drivers and 300000 riding children under the Uniform Traffic Code with approval from Col Homer Garrison. Drivers must escort small children, may not leave the bus, and require first aid training and Red Cross certificates. Regular inspections, weekly reports, color repaint by January 1 1948, eight inch black lettering, semaphore signal arms, lights and flares are mandated.
The Shiner Public Schools begin the 1947-1948 term on Monday September 1 at 845 am with classes from 845 to 400 pm. An assembly for all students and patrons will open the day for instructions and orientation.
The V F W Post 6209 holds a regular meeting at Blucher Park this Thursday night August 21 at 8 p.m. All members are urged to attend.
Jerry F. Chilek aged 19 years 10 months 25 days died after a car explosion from a stray match while searching for discharge papers following a rollover near his home. He served thirteen months in the ETO with the 332nd Engineers and received military honors at burial. Survivors include parents Rudy and the late. three sisters and six sisters. Funeral rites were at St Ann's Hochheim with VFW escort and color guards.
The coming school year offers Ninth grade courses English 1 algebra 1 world history science homemaking vocational agriculture and commercial work. Tenth grade lists English 2 algebra 2 biology homemaking vocational agriculture and commercial work. Eleventh grade includes English 3 Spanish 1 plane geometry American history homemaking vocational agriculture and commercial work. Twelfth grade covers English 4 Spanish 2 civics and economics homemaking vocational agriculture and commercial work. New students must bring credits at registration to avoid delays.
About fifty newspaper folks attended a clinic in San Marcos hosted by Addison Buckner president of the South Texas Press Association. The event featured demonstrations of Buckner photo engraving, a college barbecue, and an afternoon journalism session with critiques from Walter Richter. Attendees toured the Marine Garden on Spring Lake and learned ways to improve their weeklies from various Texas papers.
