Holy Cross Luther Leaguers present a repeat performance of Here Comes Charlie by Jay Tobias. The same cast returns at Yoakum High School Auditorium Friday at 8 00 p.m. with a free will offering during intermission.
Firemen's Wives Auxiliary reserves City Hall on Tuesday August 25 at 8 00 p m. Knights of Columbus Council 3081 meets at St James Catholic Hall Gonzales on Thursday August 20 at 8 00 p m all members urged. Bunjes H D Club picnic at Sulphur Park pool Friday August 21 at 2 00 p m Miss Werth demonstrates hair care and styling.
In Crawfordsville Arkansas five children suffocated in an airtight 100 pound ice box while mother worked nearby. In Richmond Virginia an abandoned wooden ice box yielded four more bodies after a two day missing search involving airplanes and helicopters. Names include Walter Chas. Boykin seven son of Dr J Melvin Boykin Temple Texas and twins Woodrow Wilson Blackstock seven and George Blackstock five, with funeral rites noted for Boykin in Taft Texas.
The article notes two Houston incidents where small boys suffocated playing in an abandoned ice box. It mentions city ordinances fining $50 for unsafe used ice boxes and reports a Kerrville couple's twenty month old baby dying after drinking Energine cleaner.
Superintendent Neal B. Fox states Shiner High and elementary faculty for the 1953 54 term are set. Three new teachers join the faculty including Mrs Frank L Schovassa Mrs Nannie L Scott and Miss Q Coleen Clements. The Negro school faculty is also named with renewed schedule.
Shiner Little League meets Garwood in the second game Saturday night August 22 at 8 45 in Hallettsville’s Annual Rotary Tournament.
A district wide teachers meeting in the high school auditorium at 10 am on August 31 begins the new year. Pupils register September 1 from 8 to 11 am with buses operating routes. Class work starts September 2 at 8 45 am to 3 45 pm. Parents are urged to attend opening events and the general assembly at 9 am September 2 in the gym.
Shiner High School P T A held its first 1953 54 meeting with new president Mrs Elton Zander presiding. Committees were named for table project and cones, membership, and ways and means. The annual teachers reception is planned for Sept 4 at 8 pm with invitations extended. Life honorary member Walter C Schmidt named. Magazine subscriptions offered by Mrs Hy Schierschwitz at 50 cents and 1 25 respectively.
The Wesley class of the Methodist Church announces a rummage sale for Saturday August 22. The church and friends of the congregation are urged to save articles for the sale.
Funeral services for Albin Paul Heidrich were held Wednesday at Buffington Funeral Home Shiner at 5:00 p.m. He died August 17 at his son’s home in Shiner aged 86 years 4 months 16 days. Burial was in Shiner City Cemetery with Rev. Edwin J. Oehlke officiating. The Lutheran choir sang at the chapel and graveside. Heidrich, born in Gera Germany in 1867, married Marie Peters in 1885 and came to America in 1891. Survivors include five daughters three sons and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pallbearers named.
Charlie Janota Jr. of Route 2 Gonzales finished ninth in the National Farm Life Insurance Company summer contest. A Gonzales High School graduate in 1943 he later fought polio with treatments at Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation before moving to Shiner. A company publication praised his determination and his battle from a wheelchair for business efforts.
The heat continues with temperatures around 107 degrees as cotton harvest moves rapidly. Farmers praise gathering despite drought with ranchers seeking rain and scarce water on parched ranges. Only once since 1925 have such registrations occurred.
Farmers may obtain 80 percent loan for tin storage structures up to 45 cents per bushel of rated capacity with four years to repay at 4 percent interest. Repayments start 12 months after disbursement. corn and grain sorghum loans available. Final corn loan rate to be announced October 1 1953 says Edgar Freytag Lavaca County PMA.
Public weigher L. M. Roeder reports 3,870 bales of new cotton received up to Tuesday night August 19. There was no report during this week last year. The August 21, 1951 total stood at 3,082 bales.
The Texas Legislature amends the Workmen's Compensation law to allow insurance companies to pay for chiropractic services for back and spinal injuries effective August 26, making Texas the 39th state to recognize chiropractic care. The changes also extend coverage to government workers in cities towns and villages and again include chiropractic care.
A Sunday gathering at the Welhausen dam included multiple Cimrhanzel families from Houston and San Antonio along with other relatives. The reunion featured Mr. and Mrs. James Cimrhanzel and children, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Kahanek and son, and many other Cimrhanzel relatives.

Cable reports the death of Mrs. J. P. Bartak in Vienna with no funeral details available. Survived by sister Miss Lucie Draper and brothers Harvey Hal and Gerald Draper of Houston. three Bartak children remain in the United States. Bartaks maintained a Shiner home and Dr. Bartak's address is given as a U.S. mission channel in Austria.
During Mrs Percy Garbade visit to Weimar last week joyous news spread that PFC Edwin A Billock known as Bubba was released in a war prisoner exchange. His parents recalled the long wait since February 12 1951 when he was captured and later listed missing before letters resumed. The community shares relief and pride as Bubba’s homecoming nears.
Texas lawmakers enacted two measures to curb trucking abuses. Starting August 26, 1953, overloaded drivers must obtain extra registration or be unloaded on the spot, with exceptions for livestock or perishables. A second law requires nonowners operating a truck to file a lease copy with the State Department and carry lease documents in the vehicle to protect shippers.
