The Grand Theatre announces a 3-D opening in Yoakum August 13 with the technicolor drama Fort Ti starring George Montgomery and a 3-D comedy The Stooges. The manager promises the best in 3-D pictures and future releases.
The Shiner Volunteer Fire Depart ment youth team faces Shiner High School on the local diamond August 7. The lineup includes Simper Svatek Kubicek Kubecka Macek Migl Schacherl Valis Valis Mikes Seidenberger with Schmidt Minear Kasper as coaches. President Schmidt to throw out the first ball.
Lavaca County health officials warn rats still inhabit parts of the county and Typhus Fever reservoirs remain. County Agent John V Lindsey announces a county wide volunteer rat bait distribution with Warfarin bait orders taken August 1 to September 1 at his Hallettsville office to prevent fall harvest losses.
Immanuel Lutheran Church Dreyer announces a weekly schedule with services church school and choir practice. A congregational meeting will elect a building contractor based on bids after the Sunday worship. Also listed are church council and Luther League meetings and a Ladies Aid session.
The Shiner Rotary Club met at Betty's Cafe with Don Kasper in charge. General Hayden Boatner, West Point 1924 graduate and long-serving officer, described his Korea and China service and detailed events at Koje Do prison riots. He noted Communist indoctrination and the need to curb brutality.
The August 6 election asks voters in the Shiner Independent School District to approve a $200000 building program. A Citizens Committee and the Gazette have publicized every detail, urging timely action to advance education and modernize facilities.

Mrs Homer Chandler remains in hospital after a fall that caused knee injuries.
President Eisenhower issued orders making fathers subject to the draft unless they prove fatherhood before August 25 1953 or show extreme hardship. Existing father deferrals remain valid if a bona fide home family relation is kept. others must prove paternity or pregnancy before the deadline. The move aims to end a perceived inequity where temporary deferments led to nearly permanent exemptions. Local boards fear self creating new fathers to dodge service and to avoid quotas.

Mrs Etta Welhausen of Yoakum died August 3 in Huth Memorial Hospital at 11 26 am Funeral services were held at Buffington Chapel Yoakum with Rev E C McDonald officiating She was born September 11 1881 near Flatonia and taught at Shiner High School before moving to Yoakum in 1908 Survivors include daughter Melba and sons Harry and Philip all of Yoakum as well as sisters Dee Barker Rosharon J E Henkel Brownwood and one sister Oscar Thompson preceded in death Graveside rites were held at Shiner City Cemetery beside her husband who died in 1936
Joseph Muras, Pan-American Life Insurance general agent in Shiner, earned convention eligibility in New York for August 10 11 and 12. He and Mrs Muras along with Mrs Emil Hajek will depart Houston by train Friday and reach New York Sunday. E J Kempe is home recovering after a fall from a Texaco yard rack with a serious leg injury. Funeral services were held in Gonzales for Adolph Kuehn with Mr and Mrs W Tieken and Mr and Mrs Otto Vogt in attendance.
