Fathers Subject To Draft Under New Orders

President Eisenhower issued orders making fathers subject to the draft unless they prove fatherhood before August 25 1953 or show extreme hardship. Existing father deferrals remain valid if a bona fide home family relation is kept. others must prove paternity or pregnancy before the deadline. The move aims to end a perceived inequity where temporary deferments led to nearly permanent exemptions. Local boards fear self creating new fathers to dodge service and to avoid quotas.

Former Resident Mrs E Welhausen Laid to Rest

Mrs Etta Welhausen of Yoakum died August 3 in Huth Memorial Hospital at 11 26 am Funeral services were held at Buffington Chapel Yoakum with Rev E C McDonald officiating She was born September 11 1881 near Flatonia and taught at Shiner High School before moving to Yoakum in 1908 Survivors include daughter Melba and sons Harry and Philip all of Yoakum as well as sisters Dee Barker Rosharon J E Henkel Brownwood and one sister Oscar Thompson preceded in death Graveside rites were held at Shiner City Cemetery beside her husband who died in 1936

Muras Qualifies for Pan American Convention trip

Joseph Muras, Pan-American Life Insurance general agent in Shiner, earned convention eligibility in New York for August 10 11 and 12.
