Huaghs-Helmers Thomas Hughs and Miss Stella Helmers wed at the Methodist parsonage in Hallettsville with Miss Mae Hughs and Jeffrey Mikulik present. Bride a Shiner High alumna taught in area schools. groom, W W I veteran and rural carrier, both of Shiner.
We thank Father Netardus and the Convent Sisters Herman Sons Lodge and others for ministering to us during our sorrow. Grateful for flowers and to Kolar Starek Post American Legion. Sincerely Mrs Carl E Pawelka Mrs Emilie Pawelka and family.
Rudy T Harta and Miss Olga Kostohryz were married in Austin on a Thursday evening at 7 at the groom’s sister’s home with Rev Kostohryz officiating. Rudy is the son of Mr and Mrs Tom Hurta and has worked four years in a drug business. Olga, formerly of the West school faculty, is expected to be a valuable addition to Shiner’s young matrons and the couple plans a new bungalow on Avenue F amid well wishes.
H. H. Striebeck of Wolters Bros Co leaves Sunday for Dallas to attend the style show and view the Southwest fashion center developments. He plans to visit the St. Louis market before returning.
Frank J. Vesely proprietor of Opera House Filling Station informs the public that from August 1, 1925, onward sales will be on a strict cash basis. He thanks patrons for past support and hopes to continue serving them.
The City Council informs residents that Walter Richardson, a colored man, is appointed as the official scavenger for Shiner and urges the residence section to prefer him. Competing trash wagons face intrusion as the city consolidates fees to support one permanent worker.
Schunenburg Sticker reports that Dr I E Clark of this city, long a state senator, will again seek the State Senate seat. He confirms his candidacy for the next election and says his platform will be announced later.
Catholic church lists Sunday services at 7 30 and 9 30 A M. Weekday Masses: Wednesday and Friday at 7 30 A M. Other days at 6 30 A M.
Mr and Mrs John Henkhaus announce the arrival of a charming baby girl born last Saturday August 1 to bless their home.
Lavaca County officials announce a state grant of 165000 to match 165000 raised locally for the Sweet Home to Schulenburg highway project. The county has spent 200000 on grading and bridges, with the Navidad River bridge still to be completed. A second route from Cistern to Yoakum via Flatonia, Moulton, and Shiner is planned, linking Yoakum to the Sweet Home corridor.
A large congregation gathered on Sunday July 26 at United Dr Martin Luther Church for a confirmation service where Lorine Koerrer and Alfred Sander joined Communion Membership. A second service on August 2 admitted fifteen youths including Adolph Berger Emil Berger Ella Huber Walter Huber Adolf Lichey and others after eight weeks of Bible History and Catechism instruction. Rev Pfenninger delivered sermons from Matt 10 28 33 and 1 John 2 28 3 in a seasonally adorned church with Caladiums Periwinkle and other flowers.
The Yoakum community longs for the health of Dr J D Gray who suffered a stroke last Thursday. A former Shiner resident, he is regarded as a skilled surgeon and a loyal friend, with widespread esteem and concern from the old hometown and surrounding area.
E G Buske reports new cotton receipts including two bales: one for Otto Strauss near town and one for Chas Maeker from Route 2. Trautweir and Wolters ginned a bale for John Ondrusek of Mt Olive. Anton Schaefer delivered a bale ginned by Fojtik and Stluka.
A slow drizzling rain fell on Sunday with a noticeable drop in temperature. The light precipitation affected outdoor plans and brought cooler air to the area.
The commissioners court meeting with County Judge Stavinoha and commissioners Matula Butchek Burkett Ponton set the 1925 tax rate at 41 1 2 cents per $100. General Fund 24 cents, Courthouse 1 cent, Bridge Bonds 1 cent, Bridge Repair 12 cents, Road and Bridge 15 cents, Road District No. 1 Bonds 25 cents, Road District No. 21st issue 40 cents, Road District No. 22d issue 30 cents, Special Road Taxes 3 15c, 4 15c, 5 15c, 6 15c, 8 15c, and All Occupation Taxes at 1-2 of state tax. Miss Ethel Hoffman resumes leadership of the Wolters Bros millinery parlor for the coming season. A seasoned expert from St Louis, she brings a wealth of experience and the latest fall millinery line to Shiner, welcomed by friends in business and social circles.
A. J. Blohm plans to market in Dallas this fall signaling a fashion center tone equal to Fifth Avenue. He will attend with his assistant Miss Patek to make distinctive purchases for the firm J. C. Blohm & Son.
Senator Russek of Schulenburg attended a Wednesday afternoon gathering and Firemen’s entertainment at Oriental Hall Wednesday night as a guest. He informed the Hallettsville Herald he is a candidate for re election to continue as Senator of the district. The reporter notes he is likely to be returned, not by a fixed two term rule but by being the right man in the right place.
Rev. J. D. McWhorter will lead both morning and evening services at the Methodist Church next Sunday. The public is invited to attend the regular appointments.
The Dallas News notes the drouth is not confined to Texas, with some regions receiving showers aiding crop progress while others face famine measures. It states cotton crops are affected not only in Texas but elsewhere, and remarks Texas' vast size limits any single drought from covering it all.
