Obituary for R. T. Thornton of Flatonia 1914

The obituary reports the death of R. T. Thornton of Flatonia on Friday April 7 1914 in Lavaca County. He was 17 and a member of the Baptist church in Athens Georgia. Survived by his wife Miss Alker and several daughters and relatives in Flatonia Moulton San Marcos and Shiner. Services were conducted by Rev Pathena at the Flatonia Baptist Church with a Masonic Lodge funeral and remains sent to Moulton by the lodge plate. Community mourns the loss as family members and friends attend from nearby towns.

Miss Koniakovsky reports grades for open ed exercises on Thursday morning with the song Old Jackage. The lesson includes Reading I Am Yours and an Action Song by the Primary Class. Supt Ponton notes punishment for Unfaithfulness. Four visitors attend: Mrs N H Striebeck Mr Striebeck of Yoakum and Misses Lillie and Stella Rinn of Yoakum.

K Club Meeting Highlights Mrs Hughs Addresses Members

A K Club gathering last Thursday featured a two course refreshment service and an address by honored guest Mrs C M Hughs who urged club unity and voted thanks. The program included roll call hostesses and topics on Scotch heroes writers and monuments plus historic readings and a vocal solo. The announcement notes Strauss seeks re election as precinct 8 treasurer with two terms already served and pledges to continue faithful service as a Democrat in the forthcoming primary on July 25.

The Civic Club and Habermacher will hold an officer election at Wellhausen Park at 4 o clock on the 130th. The meeting aims to fill officer positions and set club priorities.

Shiner Citizens Form Commercial Club at City Hall

A large meeting of Shiner residents last Thursday at the city hall organized a Commercial Club. J D Abermacher chaired, H H Stiebeck elected chairman, T J Ponton temporary secretary. M G Harris of Cuers Commercial Club spoke on benefits and cautioned against overextension. Rady Flato of Kingsville shared club advantages. Committees were named for organization and by laws. a monthly trades day was suggested.

Public Works and Tax Items From Session of County Court

The session of the County Commissioners Court met this week on Wednesday at noon. Items approved include petition for district No. 61 with metes and bounds, petition for Public Weigher at Sweet Home in Lavaca County, and changes to district No. 55. Delinquent taxes for 1915 and assessments on lands in arrears were noted. Bills on poll taxes and occupation taxes ending April 30, 1914 were submitted. Bids for two iron bridges across creeks were delayed with details of date for receiving bids.
