Lightning struck the Charlottenburg church nine miles west of Hallettsville early Tuesday, loosening planks and setting a church bench afire. The blaze was contained with about 25 dollars in damage covered by insurance.
In the senior spelling contest at the Lavaca County Interscholastic meet Hallettsville and Shiner tied with 10 points each after both schools missed two words.
The last criminal case tried was Ludwig Cizek charged with rape. the jury failed to agree, resulting in a mistrial. The case was continued until the next term of court.
The XXth Century Club met at Mrs. Edgar C. Wolters. The program featured America sung by the club, Civic Lesson on the Federal Constitution and Bill of Rights, a House of Representatives lesson led by Mrs. C. C. Amsler, and a piano solo Romance by Mrs. Wendiland Jr.
The Shiner Commercial Club met at City Hall with strong attendance. Secretary filed the annual financial statement showing 2987.98 in cash and investments including a Liberty Bond and a city note. Officers elected include Peck Welhausen president H H Striebeck first vice president Ed Herder second vice president M E Wolters treasurer Edwin Wolters. Directors include A J Blohm and H G Hollman. The club, organized April 16 1915, promotes local improvements and invites farmers to join.
Miss Meta Holchak, a bride of next month, is the guest of honor at a party hosted by Miss Leonida Schuchman. A proclamation hidden on spice plates announces Meta Holchak and Rudolf Valenta’s engagement to be formalized on or after May 1. The event included games of hearts, a trousseau contest, and bouquets for the honoree.
White children total 527 with 161 boys and 166 girls. Colored children total 60 with 22 boys and 88 girls. Census notes an increase. Dewberry crop reports indicate a bumper year overall.
At a mass meeting in Austin a citizens committee was appointed to help purchase homes and private property within 185 acres for the University of Texas campus. The move follows a Legislative appropriation of 1,850,000 dollars and may require more funds, with Austin citizens to bond for any excess.
Augusta Victoria former Empress of Germany died in the Netherlands last Monday at 638 years old. She will be buried at Potsdam. O W Miller, local manager of the Southland Lumber Co., left for Houston Monday to attend the State Lumbermen s Convention.
Mrs. Ela Moeckel returned last week from a pleasant visit to her daughter Mrs. Gilbert Bluwlery at Seguin.
Mrs Anna Koenning hosted visitors including Mr and Mrs Henry Mueller and Julius Koenning last Sunday. On Tuesday Mrs Anna Koenning hosted Mr and Mrs F W Stratman and Henry Mueller with Julius Koenning visiting Thursday. A dance at Witting drew the group last Saturday. Anna Koenning hosted Fritz Heinze and Miss Bettie Winkler from West Holt on Tuesday night. Bettie Winkler is staying with John Koenning in Shiner.
The Easter entertainment scheduled for last Sunday at the Methodist church was postponed due to bad weather and set for Sunday April 17.
The Lavaca County Farmers Union meeting in Yoakum on April 4 1921 adopted a resolution opposing Governor Pat Neffs plan to merge the State Market and Warehouse Department with the State Department of Agriculture. The group argues the merger harms farmers by eliminating the only reliable marketing channel and calls for continued support of a separate marketing department. The secretary is instructed to send copies to Gov Neff Senate and House members and local papers.
