An old dateline discusses George Burgess and Richard Gliney as potential presidential candidates. It notes Burgess returning from Washington, views on tariff agitation, and speculation about Democratic and Republican prospects in the election.
Emil Gold the tombstone agent left for Schulenburg Tuesday. Dr F W Ledbetter of Halletsville left for home Saturday afternoon. County Judge Gray of Halletsville wags in the city Sunday and Monday. Mesdames Braunkenhoefer and Kotzebue spent time with relatives in Shiner. The Moulton institute sent the county tatle in Halttsville last Friday and Saturday. Mrs A M Kotzebue and Miss Lizzie Hegel left Friday noon. Profs C A Peterson and A Markovsky traveled the countryside in cowboy fashion.
The Teachers Institute held Friday and Saturday March 27 and 28 drew good attendance from Shiner district schools though none from Shiner school itself. Prizes awarded to pupils included Mamie Smith and Frank Macha of Shiner, Robert Welting of Green school, and aliases Louie Huebner Eddie Wendel Louis Blume among adults.
Kiameadd Allen of Hovs-Plage made a deal with a builder owning land near the Wohlfart tract about four acres for ten dollars and $200. Reports say transfers proceed with weekly arrivals. Another transfer shows Mr. Gaston selling to BEd of Houston for 400 per acre, near the well on the Wohlfart tract where operations began.
An assortment of lawns offered at five cents per yard, better quality lawns at five cents, batistes and organdies in white or color from thirty two and a half cents, mercerized fabrics in Madras and ginghams, a wide silk line with Mull Gauze de Soie and Taffetas, trimmings, laces, embroideries, insertions, and pearl buttons in assorted sizes and colors all priced very low.
A sale listing odds and ends in suspenders with about 40 pairs left at 15c. A complete line of suspenders at 25 and 50c. New up-to-date Cluett Peabody & Co brands at 10c each or 2 for 25c for men and boys.
Local items report visits by Elias Pogue of Lang and Wm Elias of Houston, plus Dave Lambeth and J B Connor in Smithville. Cattle trades, medical work by Dr KE Davie, and social scenes fill April notes. Easter verses close the page amid spring scenery and weather praise.
Notice announces a full stock of sweeps plows cotton and corn planters for sale. Includes Middlesplit ters and sweepstocks crafted by A Pfaender blacksmith and wheelwright in Shiner Texas.
Fr Oo 5 n Ei 1 s the city school taught by Prof. Herzig and Misa McCullen closed with a basket picnic on the last day. Prof. Herzig cites poor health and will quit teaching per physician’s advice. Engle district could extend term to eight months with proper effort. Frederick Siems resigns as postmaster. Will Swenke appointed to fill remaining term. Post office moved to Mr. Gallia’s store. tinshop Simsa's sold to J. J. Gallia.
The ad states Grove's Tasteless Chill Tonic contains iron and quinine with plain bottle labeling. It promises no cure and no pay, priced at 50 cents.
Otto Henkhaus and wife transfer 50 acres in K Goodman survey and 20 acres in W HB Ban bell survey to Chas Hireeh Jr for 1960 dollars.
