Gifford Ad Redmond, the 3 child of Mr and Mrs Redmond, was severely burned Sunday forenoon when playing with fire in the yard. His clothing caught fire and neighbors could not save him. He died seven in the evening after lingering in agony. Funeral services were held Monday at Ridge cemetery.
James Goodnight surrendered to Sheriff Fox at No Slesville with attorney Asa Brul den and posted $500 bond. The alleged assault with intent to kill occurred at Ridge church near Sheridan last winter when John W. Perry was struck by a brick at services, after prior trouble with Goodnight and a youth named Eberwide.
The town board met in regular session in the Council Chamber with all members present. Laborers Laf Lovell and John Pulliam were paid 5.50 and 4.75 respectively. Surveyor Mitchell reported on grade lines for sidewalks and paving plans. The case of Milt Evans against the town was set for trial Friday the 25th. The attorney and marshal will prepare witnesses, with 100 allocated for witness fees. No action on sewer bond sales.
Monday afternoon the Power House whistle triggered a fire alarm causing brief panic. Reported as A C Pearson’s residence on Fifth Street but actually Sherman Pierce’s home in Park addition, where a summer kitchen fire damaged roof and siding. Mrs Pierce had been ironing. a portion of the laundry was lost. Loss about 100 dollars with no insurance.
A Friends Yearly Meeting at Plainfield drew the largest Sunday attendance on record. Local attendees included EW Reagan Wilson Reagan Late Mendenhall J. B. Foulke W. A. Johnson and wife Charley Hoffman and wife Willis Johnson and wife and Miss Zada Bragg. Most returned home Sunday night.
A reunion of veterans was held yesterday at Kirklin with about fifteen attendees from the area. The program featured speeches, music, and the customary good dinner.
Eld and Orcutt assisted in the revival at the Christian church with Rev. Brown leading the opening exercises. The high school lists weekly pupils by year and notes teachers’ meeting concerns about too many visitors, an enrollment of 133 in high school and 176 overall, with 48 pupils per teacher on average. Visitors and local teachers are listed including Ward buildings and Miss Hansen, Bernard Walkington, and Elder W H Brown.
Sheridan opens its football season tomorrow with a home game against Shortridge. Last year Shortridge beat Sheridan 17 to 0 on Sheridan’s field. Admission 24 cents for gentlemen and 15 cents for ladies, 25 cents with a companion who is admitted free. Game at 3 o clock. Lineups list Sheridan and Shortridge players with substitutes.
The Seventh District Christian church convention gathered a large crowd early in the week in Atlanti. Missionary speaker G. L Wharton, with 17 years in India, addressed a full house Tuesday night. Sheridan delegates included Mrs O D Williamson, Misses Viola Davis Linnie Scott Laura Underwood, Mrs J O Pearson and Messrs F L Davis and R BR Williamson.
