Epworth League Candy and Post Card Stand Nets $10.25

The Epworth League ran a stand on Main Street Saturday to sell candy and post cards. It netted $10.25, aimed at paying a $40 debt incurred by decorating the booth, and extra items were disposed of.

Eastern Stars Confer Degree on 26 Candidates

The local order of Eastern Stars entertained the Radiant Chapter O. E. S. from Noblesville Friday evening which conferred the degree on twenty six candidates. Following the degree work a banquet was served in the dining hall. An elaborate menu was prepared and a good social time followed. The order flourished here several years ago but had been allowed to die out until this spring when another charter was secured and an effort made to organize it again. Their efforts have been fairly successful, and it is thought that it will regain its old time prestige.

Schools Open With Full Attendance Despite Enrollment Dip

Schools opened with full attendance across grades. First day enrollment showed a 24 student drop from last year, attributed to fewer transfers and cannery employment. High school started with 162, rising to 172 after ten new students. A half day schedule is set for first B grade due to crowding, while work continues smoothly and parents are welcome to visit.

Arrest of Hopper or Riley in Indiana linked to Kentucky mail theft

Samuel Hopper or G W Riley was arrested by a U S Marshal in Indiana and taken to Indianapolis. The case stems from a Kentucky registered letter robbery in Maysville about a year ago. He denied charges, claimed the name G W Riley, and was identified by Miss Dillon at the local post office. Hopper or Riley faced trial in the Kentucky district.

Thistlethwaite Takes Athletic Director Post at Earlham

Glen Thistlethwaite left for Richmond to begin work as athletic director and instructor in Surveying at Earlham College. He previously held a similar post at Dana College Jacksonville and met with great success. His new role at Earlham is important and local friends will follow his work with interest.

Dr. J P Fouch of Tipton has leased the Ridgeway rooms for an office and will operate from the T C Harris property near the Second ward building. Raised nearby, he has practiced in the west for years and served as U S Pension Examining Surgeon for 12 years. He plans to start business soon and comes well recommended.

Attendance soars for Uncle Tom’s Cabin show

A weekend performance of Uncle Tom’s Cabin drew a crowd far beyond seating, with hundreds turned away. Reported illness of W.H. Green delayed Abe patious, while E.Y. Green of Chester appeared in the audience. Nearby, Wm. Goings of Clinton County described a 12 year old brown mare.
