Pension law pleases local Grand Army men

Local Grand Army men express satisfaction with the recent Sherwood Smoot Sulloway pension law. The compromise bases calculations on age and service, promising material increases for those previously drawing 12 or 16 dollars, while others with shorter service gain accordingly.

Hold Up Reported Near Bakers Corner

Carl Cottingham, a Johnson bakery worker, says he was held up late Saturday night near the D. C. Leonard farm at Bakers Corner. A masked stranger stopped him on the road, demanded money, and took about five dollars in silver before fleeing into the darkness. Cottingham could not identify the robber.

Rural carriers receive pay boost under new law

A new law effective July 1 increases rural carrier pay by 74 dollars a year for a standard 24 mile route. Each mile outside the standard adds or subtracts 46.75 dollars to the yearly salary. Mayor Martz of Tipton died Friday night in Indianapolis after gallstone operation. he led in G A R Masons Elks and other groups.

Error in Adams Township School Count Reverses Gain

A revised 1911 count corrected an 5 year discrepancy. The total rose from 581 to 586 after discovering an enumerator missed southeastern district. The current year’s revised tally brings Adams township school children to 608.

William Winborough a Clinton county resident for fifty years died at his Pickard home at 69 years 11 months and 28 days. He was a Civil War veteran with heart disease. Survived by wife three children George Wimborough Lebanon Robert at home and Mrs M T Ploughe Kempton. Funeral by Rev Clem Ricketts at Hillis church on Saturday. He had been a Hills Baptist member forty years.

SECTION MEN WANT MORE PAY ON MONON LINE

Strikes among Monon line section men paused as workers return. Sheridan crews were out briefly, while others stayed away longer over wage demands. Current pay 15 cents per hour for ten summer hours and nine winter hours. men seek 173 cents per hour for a ten hour day year round. Company offered ten hour day at old rate. negotiations continue. Prolonged absence could cause bigger troubles. Section bosses not part of the strike due to higher pay.

Successful Hog Vaccination Reported in Boone County

A herd in Boone County shows unusually good results after vaccination for cholera. After five brood sows died in a thirty six head herd, owner Bert Gallian sought veterinary advice to move the remainder and vaccinate. No further fatalities have occurred and immunity is expected. Vaccination is gaining popularity among hog raisers with multiple reported successes.

One Applicant Competes for Terhune Postmaster Job

A civil service exam held Saturday by Postmaster Newby for the Terhune vacancy drew a single applicant, Mrs. Lizzie Nicholson. Her papers were sent to Washington for evaluation, and results are expected in a month or more before the postmaster is chosen.

Widow Mrs Whicker of Joliet Passes at 71

Mrs Rachael Whicker long lived alone on her Joliet area farm died Saturday afternoon from lung fever at 71 Burial took place Monday at Little Eagle cemetery with services at her home led by Rev Newlin Stuart She was widowed about twenty eight years and is survived by two sons John and Bert in Missouri and a daughter Mrs Ella Huffman near Lamong

Benjamin R. Sweeney Dies at 44 in Joliet

Benjamin R. Sweeney of Joliet died Monday morning of consumption at age 44. He is survived by a widow and one son. The remains were taken to North Vernon for burial.
