County commissioners held a lengthy meeting in Noblesville to dispose of numerous items on their agenda. The session covered road and bridge work, school matters, and pending legal actions, with reports from the County Board of Education and bids for manuscript printing contracts.
A fast burning inferno swept a large district damaging shops and residences along Main Street. Officials note many occupants escaped with few possessions as several offices and stores including Bradfield Mitchell harness shop and Geo W Osborn law office suffered major losses. Prosecutor Geo Osborn was severely burned while fleeing. Continued on page 2.
A Sunday blaze caused by Feo Drake ignited shavings at Weaver Lumber Co and spread rapidly through frame buildings across Main Street between Fifth and Ohio streets. Two strong southwest gales carried embers as the Wesleyan church, nearby barns, and homes burned, with observers posted on rooftops to monitor drifting embers.
Firefighters saved the engine after most chemicals burned within minutes. The ladder stock and room housing the apparatus suffered heavy losses. A replacement chemical supply was ordered from Logansport and H B Johnson was to overhaul the engine. The injured included Albert Moon, 17, cut near the neck. Prof G W Osborn, burned on the face. R A Carroll, hands cut. Errun Elliott, fell from roof. Gus Henderson and Ora Ridge, burns. J M Applegate overcome by heat. Willis Bohannon, hurt on the face.
A major fire in Whien displaced many residents and damaged several businesses. Bradfield and Mitchell rented space in the opera house block while city offices moved temporarily to the News building second story. The Lumber Co. kept operating, and Dr. Newby plans to rebuild. Dozens of locals joined the effort, with as many as six houses burning at once before wind shifts slowed the fire.
