The Sheridan Packing Company finished its pea packing Wednesday. Statewide yields were about half a crop with 5000 cases packed in Sheridan this year. Best yield noted was $35 per acre. Heat and drought harmed peas and oats similarly. A short packing pause awaits corn and tomato harvests due mid next month. Prospects are good for tomatoes and corn barring unforeseen issues. Farmers note soil improvement from tomato cultivation, especially on clay soil. George Stahl’s Terhune farm reports one of the area’s best corn stands and bumper past tomato yields.
