Noblesville Indiana January 24 1918 A jury acquitted Clarence Ogle in a high profile arson case. The trial drew countywide attention with testimony about a dangerous work incident and a neighbor’s estate dispute. The report also notes related probate and divorce actions and a county clerk statistics for 1913.
After a day in court the jury found Oliver H Mann guilty of road rule violations with a $15 fine. Other cases include Warren Clark's liquor operation postponement, James Bush's guilty plea for operating a blind tiger, and Wesley Revis estate tax settlement totaling $99.38 with distribution to heirs.
W. H. Stafford of route 25 announces a public sale prior to relocating to Crystal Canyon California. He spent last season there and was impressed by the climate and surroundings.
Detectives from Hamilton County met at Westfield to form a county union under E. J. Mendenhall as president, Erwin Cox as vice-president, and C. D. Barker as secretary treasurer. C. F. Martin of Jamestown urged a higher citizenship standard. First meeting scheduled in Westfield on Saturday March 21 at 2 o'clock.
County Republicans gathered in Noblesville for a mass convention despite bad roads. Adams township chose temporary then permanent chairmen as the meeting endorsed delegating the nomination process after thirty years. Township conventions and precinct committeemen were set for February 21 with district delegates to Frankfort.
Last summer the town began sprinkling brick streets and charging property owners by front foot. The new assessment sheets show total costs for the season ranged from 1.32 to 198 dollars for full sized lots. Private firms charged 25 to 100 cents monthly per lot on Main Street with lower rates on residential streets. The municipal plan proves cheaper and simpler.
Roy Couch appointed assistant postmaster at Sheridan to succeed Closs Jones who resigned to move with his family to Alabama. Couch had clerking experience at Couch Grocery and previously at C. E. Couch’s store under the present postmaster H B. Riveard. Jones and family have already left goods shipped Saturday.
Prof. W. H. Bennett of Monon favored by Rep. Barnhart for postmaster. Bennett heads Monon Schools two years and is a Democrat. The job pays 31650 plus fees. he will resign school duties once commission is issued.
Secretary of State L. G. Ellingham leads efforts to enforce current auto mobile license rules as complaints rise about old plates or no plates being used. Authorities emphasize compliance to avoid penalties under the law.
Grover Miller sold his 53 acre tract four and a half miles north of Sheridan to Ed Pierce for 1250 dollars. The Cox and Melson agency arranged the deal this week.
J. York former Hawilton county sheriff died at his son Harrys home in Indianapolis Wednesday morning after a brief heart illness. He was sixty nine and a member of the G A R Red Men Mason I O O F and Knights of Pythias. The funeral was held in Indianapolis yesterday.
Vinton Shannon, a Boxley High School and Indiana University graduate from the Ekin neighborhood, joins Shortridge High School as a faculty member and basketball coach after teaching at Decatur JIl High School for several years.
