Cicero Man Appointed Hamilton County Food Administrator

John Bert of Cicero, former County Treasurer, is named Food Administrator for Hamilton County Indiana. He will open an office in Cicero and travel the county to consult with food handlers. A February 11 war conference under State Council of Defense is planned, with a meeting to coordinate county participation and a National Council of Defense speaker.

Coal Shortage Spurs Monday Coal Run In Frigid Weather

Farmers with wagons and other haulers rushed to two coal cars here Monday to secure a days supply as cold spell deepens. A car seized by town authorities was redistributed. Residents report record cold and persistent heavy snow with little relief anticipated. Local efforts aim to cut wood to ease shortages.

J E Kercheval cashier of Farmers National Bank spent the past week in Michigan City assisting George A Miller a regular examiner. They checked Citizens Bank of Kirklin which has resources over two million dollars as the state banking department hires extra help due to delays in examinations.

Noon Trains Dropped From Monon Schedule to Aid Freight

Two trains referred to as the noon trains were removed from the Monon schedule in the past week to facilitate freight movement. The change affected passenger service as freight operations took priority.

Income Tax Man Coming to Sheridan for Help

A special Internal Revenue Service representative will be in Sheridan January 28 29 30 31 to assist locals with tax problems. He began in Noblesville last Monday and will operate from the library basement during his Sheridan visit.

Sheridan Names New Town Health Officer Dr J L Beck

Dr J L Beck appointed health officer for Sher idan for the coming year. Town officials will travel to Indianapolis to attend the Public Service Commission hearing on Sheridan Water Light and Heat company plea to raise certain electricity and water rates. Meeting was postponed from last week.

New Recruits Join Sheridan Home Guard and Drill Schedule

Recent additions to the Sheridan company of Home Guards are Roy Benson, Robert Bush, Vergil Owens, Earl Thurman, Aldis Bailey and Stanley H. Moore. Four of these are within the draft age. Monday night is the regular drill time, with additional call meetings once or twice weekly at the Masonic hall.

James W. Crooks Dies at Home in Hamilton County

James W. Crooks, a prominent Hamilton county resident and former county auditor for four years, died Monday evening at his home four miles west of Cicero. He was seventy five and well known among older residents for discussions on state and national issues.

Library Hours Change After Notice

The library will be closed on Tuesdays Wednesdays and Thursdays. Fridays and Mondays keep 12 to 6 hours. Saturdays run 12 to 7. Sundays open 2 to 5 as a reading room only with no returns or loans.

Potatoes Frozen Supplies Reported Down locally

Local reports show a decline in frozen potato supplies with fewer potatoes available as stock is examined. The Josses anticipate shortages to rise as more lots are inspected.

First heatless day observed in Sheridan

Sheridan marked its first heatless day in line with Dr Garfield's plan. Many facilities stayed open while milk factories elevators banks fuel stations and public service firms remained exempt. Groceries and drug stores closed part of the day leaving some shoppers disappointed in the cold.

Mrs. Dr. I W Davenport learned Tuesday morning of the death of her aunt Mrs. Frost at the Peru home of a grandchild, A E Cathcart, Sunday night. Mrs. Frost 91 years six months, last of the Jackson family. A B Frost of Indianapolis is the survivor. Funeral was at Westfield Postmaster Alden Baker’s home, a grandson, Wednesday with burial at Summitt Lawn Cemetery.

Editor urges Hamilton county seek an agricultural agent with farming, soil and livestock knowledge to boost food production during wartime. State and national councils back sixty five agents.
