The January term docket was opened Saturday with many cases set for trial and others stricken. The court questioned attorneys about readiness, moving quickly if delays appeared. The Brookswill case remains delayed until after the March Legislature adjourns.
Otto Burton, about 35, was found dead in his Ekin residence after drinking carbolic acid following domestic troubles with his wife who had filed for divorce. Burton, who returned from Tipton around 4 pm, died within minutes. funeral held Monday at 10 o’clock East Union. This marks the second self inflicted death in the community within 10 days.
Sheridan and vicinity shows strong emigration to the South as residents move to Texas Florida North Carolina and Louisiana for health pleasure or investment. A letter from Dr and Mrs J C Newby shares views from Texas and a former resident writes from Florida about truck patch work and southern life.
The Fremium Lists for the Sheridan Poultry Show were issued this week. Breeders of pure bred poultry are invited to exhibit their fowls. Premium Lists and entry blanks are available from Secretary G. R. McMurtry.
Sheridan Fire Department moves its new fire apparatus to the frame building behind Henderson's blacksmith shop on Cora avenue. The room is double walled and sealed against cold. Dr. J Preston Fouch leaves local practice for Rosston seeking better opportunities.
The Sheri dan electric light plant lost a cylinder at the large engine forcing a temporary halt in service until Beloit Wisconsin sent a replacement. The breakdown drains the light fund, may force sale of the plant, and delays street lighting due to cold weather and no funds.
The Golden Rule, Stanley and Beau champ, C. W. Sowerwine, Smith and Collins, D. F. Hutchens, and C. A. Briges and Co. will close daily at 6 30 p m starting next Monday except Saturdays this applies through April 1 with other merchants expected to join the movement.
Wm Beard and wife left Tuesday to spend the winter in North Carolina. Mrs Beard is in poor health and doctors believe the climate may aid her recovery. Also traveling were Wm Hoover and Alf Hinshaw of Lemong for a brief sojourn in the Old North State.
The town board held its final meeting in the old quarters on Second Street and approved routine year start business. Dr. W. E. Cooper named Health Officer for 1911 while Geo. W. Osborn continues as town attorney. Light plant plans and revenue measures discussed. Claims approved include Central Elect Co. Dr. J. P. Fouch Fairbanks Morse Co. Ridge & Hall and others.
A large crowd attended the first session of the Farmer's Institute at Wesleyan church despite cold weather. Arza Millikan opened the meeting. Prof. C M Little of Purdue spoke on dairy feeding and blood lines, stressing higher protein feeds and better sires, while local high school work and Purdue dairy research were noted. The afternoon session continued with Prof Little outlining two paths to good cows and the aim of breeding for higher butter fat.
The town and township schools reopen after a week’s holiday. Efforts to keep epidemics away are noted, with calls for strict sanitary measures and vigilance against contagious diseases, citing poor ventilation as a major issue.
The Brownie car giveaway at C. W. Sowerwine store drew strong interest Saturday afternoon. Ticket 21223 belonged to E. O. Ridgeway who will receive the 4 horsepower auto. The vehicle is marketed as capable of carrying two adults at about ten miles per hour.
