Noblesville Indiana February 5 1920 by a vote of 4 to 3 the County Board of education decided at its regular monthly meeting Monday afternoon not to employ a county agriculture agent this coming year. The move ends Randolphs two year stint though some farmers urged renewal.
Oil gushed from the ground on Joe Kercheval’s wheat field after an eight inch main rotted. Standard Oil fixed the leak quickly and has compensated farm owners, with prior damage settlements noted. Pipelines across the township reportedly run from Oklahoma to the seaboard.
W. E. Hammack lost the small finger on his left hand Sunday evening. He was driving home from Sheridan and, to move his car from the road to avoid an approaching vehicle, tried to pull the front wheels around and his hand was caught in a cog.
A notice invites readers to sign at the News office to file with Ed Jackson Indiana secretary for placing Leonard Wood on the Republican primary ballots as a candidate for the U S presidency. The item asks who will be first to sign.
John Whittaker, 68, formerly of Sheridan in Tipton County, died Tuesday night after an extended illness. He was known in the community for his years of residence northwest of Sheridan.
J N Beard is confined to his home after breaking a leg in a fall on the ice last week.
Indiana farm stock on Jan 1 1920 includes more dairy cattle sheep and swine but fewer horses mules and other cattle. Milch cows rise in number and value while horses and other cattle decline. Total live stock valued around 301.5 million dollars with dairy cattle about 68.98 million.
Monon Railway officials led by E. P. Cockrell and Mr. Sherriff met Sheridan residents to discuss the north bound train passing through without stopping. Palmer reported the 4:52 north bound will stop as usual and the 9:38 south bound will stop for parties or let off north riders, with holidays and Sundays already set to stop, even as officials consider withdrawing both trains from local service.
A late Saturday incident at Terhune saw thieves enter the depot and elevator, force open safes, and remove about two thousand dollars. Only a few Kirklin tickets remained missing. Ode Wallace operated both the depot and elevator.
The Board of Education will not fill the vacancy created by Walter Northam's resignation. Supt. A Mick and Principal F V Kercheval will absorb the additional duties.
Fred Herr, who sold his farm south of Cicero at public auction, has purchased the T. L. Neill farm north of Bakers Corner and plans to move there this month.
Rolland Pickett from Akron Ohio, employed by a state agency, visited here earlier this week to promote an invisible writing fluid. He plans to open an agency office in Indianapolis.
The next regular meeting of the K. V. Elliott post of American Legion will be held next Monday night. All members are expected to be present.
Last week contracts were awarded for a new First National Bank building in Sheridan at an estimated 85000 dollars. The two story brick structure with a terra cotta trim and granite base will stand on Main and Fourth, with offices on the second floor and a bank hall on the first. The Walker-Brooks Construction Co of Indianapolis leads a local team including Ohmer's Furniture Dayton Perry Jones Burton & Kirby Forsythe Indianapolis and C H Byfield the architect. Work starts immediately with completion by November first and the bank to relocate by April first.
County Chairman Clark of Westfield and Mrs. Floyd Christian of Noblesville lead efforts for the women voters. A preliminary meeting at the public library named Mrs. H. B. Johnson township chairman. A second meeting is set for Saturday at 3 PM at the library after a 2 PM Red Cross gathering. Similar countywide mobilization continues.
Sheridan earned two wins in a season doubleheader against Boxley with the grades team defeating Adams Township 8 to 4. The B team overtime thriller ended 9 to 5 as Sheridan's varsity topped Boxley 21 to 7 amid a large, enthusiastic crowd.
