Guardsmen recount their initial chaos with the new identification passes issued across squadrons. Many praise the updated system for nonrenewal and utility at the post office and bank, while critics gripe about the photos and likeness.
The Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce and local business leaders hosted Col. E. A. Lohman at the Holt Hotel. The CO and staff met civic leaders during a social hour and dinner. Lohman pledged closer ties between Sheppard Field and Wichita Falls and thanked citizens for their cooperation. The Army notes jet planes are undergoing Arctic tests in Alaska to ensure operation in all climates.
Sgt Hubert S Farmer of Toledo was reassessed 20 years on manslaughter charges after a retrial in which new evidence failed to show malice. He was previously sentenced to life for the slayings of three soldiers at Sheppard Field October 29. Maj John F Conway ordered the retrial at the post, with Col E A Lohman announcing the ruling. The case may be reviewed by higher authority. Two other soldiers died from head injuries during the attack.
Capt. Ernest W. Huey, post provost marshal, urges all commanders and individuals to report lost or stolen items immediately. He notes barracks checks often miss items and police can recover many reported losses if notified promptly. Cooperation across post and ties with local police aid recovery efforts.
Plans this week outline an industrial incentive glider demonstration using two C 47s and one CG 4A near the hangar line next Thursday afternoon. The show will feature a glider pickup from a stationary position, a film program in Theater No 1 starting at 3 pm, and troop and equipment landings by glider. Local groups including the Wichita Junior Chamber of Commerce and Wichita Engineering Company will host social events for the visiting Troop Carrier Command personnel, many of whom are over seas returnees.
Post Salvage Office reports 30 000 pounds of wastepaper short of January minimum at Sheppard Field. Captain Winkeljohn cites 41 000 pounds drop from December due to poor squadron segregation. Squadron K praised for consistent paper separation. overall aim to boost February output by 50 percent.
With more precincts to report, Sheppard Field has collected $869.80 in the current March of Dimes Campaign. Lt. E. J. Hume announced progress and expressed confidence the total will reach $1,000 once all contributions are in.
The Promotion and Reduction Board at Sheppard Field announced Friday that seventy three promotions to private first class were awarded to men across seven squadrons. Interviews started Wednesday and orders will be released in the coming days with more recommendations pending next week.
Col. E. A. Lohman will decorate four service members at Post Headquarters this morning. Mrs. Anna L. Gose will receive the Air Medal for her husband 2nd Lt. Thomas A. Gose Jr. for five bomber missions over occupied Europe with the Third Bombardment Division. Mrs. Annie S. Buntin will receive the Air Medal for her son Staff Sgt. William C. Buntin Jr. also serving with the same outfit. Sergeant Buntin’s Air Medal covers heavy bombardment missions over Europe. Col. Lohman will pin the Purple Heart on two Sheppard Field enlisted men wounded in combat, Sgt. Dick Watson and Pfc. Leonard Meltzer.
Corporal Jean Pratt of Weiser Idaho, a WAC stationed in Italy, has her pay allotment diverted to feed and board her riding horse. Her parents receive the funds and manage horse care while she has been overseas for a year.
