Threend Wreck on the Norfolk and Western
A Norfolk and Western passenger train No 3 leaving Shepherdstown at 3820 oclock Sunday morning derailed at 245 in the afternoon one mile north of Glaegow about 40 miles from Roanoke. The wreck caused major damage to the engine tender mail baggage and two cars though the Pullman stayed on the track. Engineer Swain and Fireman Anderson were badly hurt, Swain with a broken leg and internal injuries, Anderson with a crushed arm that required amputation and burns. Conductor Crow and Brakeman Bowie were uninjured. Mail Agent Clapper and Ex-Agent Hinch survived the crash though Hinch was buried in wreckage. An initial spike between rails caused the derailment, later confessed by eleven-year-old Johanie Barger who said he hammered the spike with a rock. Swain is not expected to recover while Anderson is likely to. The day also covered the West Virginia Supreme Court session in Charles Town with Wall vs. Pennsylvania Railroad, involving cattle shipped to Jersey City and a question over attachment of a foreign car.
