Turnpike Rebuild Talks Highlight Historic Virginia Road
The State road commission contemplates rebuilding the old Northwestern Turnpike from Winchester to Parkersburg with routes debated by county seats. Historian J McCallahan notes the road’s role in westward movement, its 1831 act, and its influence on towns like Romney, Aurora, Pruntytown, Clarksburg, and Parkersburg, while later yielding to railroad prominence and ongoing local value.
