A fragmented New Orleans era piece recounts four Confederate soldiers surrendering near Petersburg after living in a cave since Appomattox. It also covers Jefferson Davis’s wartime fate talk, a harsh broadside against Tennessee Governor Brownlow, riot casualties in New Orleans, and assorted vignettes from Baltimore and Wheeling about daily life, weather, and songs.
A varied 1866 era column features verses mocking Mr Brown at Nicely's store number thirty four with a cautionary tale of marriage and gain, a preacher’s barbecued liquor vision, stories of old maids and a petrified Federal soldier, plus Civil War anecdotes and a dog faithful to Jefferson Davis as a public notice of wartime society.
A man boasting he could paralyze any verse chosen by a lady friend prompted her to recite a stanza from the Old Sexton. The exchange escalated as he quickly scribbled a remark on a scrap, leading to an awkward conclusion.
