Jefferson county farmers urged to study Harper's Magazine on dairy diversification and consider a cheese factory to reduce freight costs and West competition. Also notes on Washington pavement with limestone, Stonewall Brigade history, normal schools, a revival, Boteler’s agricultural address, imposition suits and local commerce updates.
Telegraph reports from Cumberland describe three masked men firing on Paymaster Fawcett and Superintendent Mulvaney as they paid off canal hands along the towpath. Mulvaney received minor wounds. a suspect named John Bassee was arrested but evidence is weak. A later note mentions a brief chase and a guard, with two cloaks found at the scene. Also, a Meth odist Church South meeting in Charlestown ended with ten or twelve conversions and several new members.
A severe tornado with heavy rain swept Milford Pennsylvania and nearby areas between six and seven on Saturday evening. The storm lasted about thirty minutes, uprooting trees, blowing down fences, upturning outbuildings and breaking windows.
Marriages reported from Piedmont West Virginia and Berkeley County list William Ratoman a B and O railroad brakesman wed to Mary Lambright at the bride’s father residence. Another ceremony in Huntington saw W il Holswade wed Emma Gallais Er. Robert Th Marsitall of Jefferson County married Mary R Miller of Berkeley County at the bride’s father’s home.
A series of death notices from Berkeley and Jefferson counties recount the passing of William Clifford Kear Shaw at age 2 years 1 month 19 days near Ganotown Berkeley. Mia Foot aged 81 at her residence. infant Gain and infant Childs near Ganotown. Dora Virginia aged 20 daughter of Nathan Vanmeter. Fannie May infant daughter of A and Sarah Burton. George M. Bender aged 65 years 11 months born in Frankfort Germany. Martin G. Colston aged 27 before Oct 14. J Edwin Firor 39 formerly of Washington O H. Ada Line Catharine daughter of Cornelius Zimmerman aged 11. Mary Jan daughter of Daniel Ropp aged 39 years 11 months 29 days. Otho Calvin son of Nathan Vanmeter aged 16 years 6 months. Lydia K. Trussell wife of Jonah T. Trussell daughter of James Watson aged 31. obituary Mrs S. H. Berry widow of Henry Berry Esq of Shepherdstown West Virginia.
