An 1859 St Louis incident tells how John Moore found a pocketbook with 1,200 dollars in banknotes and papers. He returned it to a grateful Covington, Kentucky man, who dressed him in a new suit, gave a silver watch with a memento inscription, five $20 gold coins, and entrusted the boy to his mother’s care. The tale continues with religious anecdotes from Peter Cartwright’s Philadelphia lecture and vivid recollections of frontier preachers and moral lessons.
A fragmentary excerpt recounts Garibaldi’s wife during his Italian campaigns. It describes her courage in danger, rescuing him and enduring hardships, riding, swimming, and sharing perilous moments. The tale ends with a moral about industrious youth and public praise for labor.
