Reminiscences and Rural Life in Sumter County High Hills
Conveys a Southern correspondent's sketches of Resting Creek Sumter County, its landscape near the Wateree, the High Hills of Santee, and notable land speculation by Col C. C. Porter. Describes farming practices for corn and cotton, local wildlife, and plantation labor dynamics, with a vivid anecdote about an alligator and frontier life in 1871 Sumter County. Also recounts Civil War reminiscences of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry at Kelley’s Ford and broader regional rail and road developments in Berkeley County and Virginia valleys.
