German immigrant Fleischer ends desperate bid on Brooklyn Bridge

An elderly German carpenter Gustay Fleischer, living at 219 East Seventy third Street with his wife and eight children, attempted suicide on the Brooklyn Bridge after posting a despairing note. He was saved by Policeman Cash, later released after help from a Brooklyn court and businessman M Steinbauer who secured work and raised funds. Neighbors and grocers brought immense aid, and Fleischer now plans to work while his family receives sustained support.
