Sunlight kills river germs boosting public health
An old newspaper snippet extols sunlight’s power to disinfect polluted river water, noting experiments in Italy show bacteria destroyed at depths of twenty inches. It likens sunrays to arrows, explains cross fire from perpendicular and oblique rays, and mentions the sun’s distance of ninety three million miles. The piece then shifts to a Baltimore hospital patient Virginia Hicks, 20, who laments men’ s indifference to homemakers and beauty over character.
