Battle of Buena Vista a Kentucky officer hailed as hero
The Life Lieut. Mekee and Col. W. K. Melee figure in a Louisville Ledger account of the Buena Vista battle. The young officer from Lexington, engaged to a Miss Wilson, died leading Kentucky regiments in a ferocious clash as Taylor and Santa Anna faced 22,000 Mexican troops. The tale ties to Col. Melee, slain earlier, and recalls chivalry, sacrifice, and the toll of war on families and comrades.
