Tunnel Collapse Blocks Rail Service in Baltimore Suburb
A large section of the Pennsylvania Railroad tunnel under Hoffman Street Baltimore caved in early Sunday morning. Train No 78 traveling from New York to Jacksonville was trapped. Engineer Morley and the fireman escaped from the west end as debris blocked the engine and three express cars. Water mains above the tunnel burst adding flood damage and widening the hole. The tunnel, built thirty years ago, spans ten city blocks nearly a mile, disrupting Baltimore traffic.
