Hans, a poor farmer, finds a wallet with ninety one gold pieces and faces a moral test from two voices the Shadow and the Shadowless. Tempted by the Shadow, he plans theft, but guided by the Shadowless he seeks honesty, returns the money, confesses to the justice, and is rewarded with marriage to the miller’s daughter and a blessed family. The tale ends with a steady life in a happy home, lit by the silver wing spirit.
A fragmentary column blends a poem praising a southern romance with a lengthy character study of Paul Jones. It extols his bravery, vanity, and literary talent, then shifts to biographical notes on his naval career, followed by assorted New York items about Townsend’s sarsaparilla profits, public morals, and contemporary opinions.
