Turf Exchange Not Wanted in Harper’s Ferry Meeting
A Shep herdstown rally opposed Jefferson County to deny a Metropolitan Turf Exchange license for a Washington area pool hall. Clergy and citizens urged rejection as Bishop Gravatt presented evidence of past gambling networks. Resolutions thanked him, petitions urged the court to refuse, and Harper’s Ferry council rescinded prior approval, signaling strong local opposition. A Charles Town county meeting was planned to continue protests.

Martinsburg Tragedy Ends in Double Death
A Martinsburg man known as Pete Hess shot his wife around 2 PM in their second story apartment near the city hall, then killed himself. The wife, about 40, was wounded and died later at King's Daughters Hospital as neighbors and authorities arrived. Witnesses said long quarrels, jealousy, and drunkenness fueled the tragedy, with Hess recently moving from the mountain area and facing a divorce suit.
