Fires, fines and trials loom in West Virginia events
The Belvidere Brewing Company stable at Harpers Ferry was partly destroyed by fire last Monday. Eight Martinsburg residents, including businessmen, were fined for sending improperly prepaid matter through the mails. The West Virginia Supreme Court granted a new trial to Paul Clifford, convicted of killing Jacob Turner in Martinsburg. St Albans near Charleston suffered another large fire, with losses over 200000 and forty buildings destroyed. The Cumberland extension train from Big Pool to Cumberland ran with officers aboard. ballast work remains along ten miles. Littleton on the B and O line near Wheeling was nearly wiped out by fire, leaving over a hundred families homeless and about 200000 in losses. Governor Dawson deployed military tents for evacuees. A three-year-old Londoun County girl died from clothing catching fire near an open grate after eye treatment in Richmondhospital.
