Turbulent town meeting ends with electric fight
A chaotic Shepherdstown council session erupts over power rates and lamp pillars. Squire vents anger at monopolies while residents complain of rising bills and service costs. Public notices and sales events follow, with local figures updating community on taxes, assessments, and upcoming auctions.
Trains 13 and 14 Reassigned on Norfolk & Western
The Shenandoah Valley division will drop trains 13 and 14 as express sections and reroute local express service between Hagerstown and Roanoke. Through express cars move to trains 1 and 2, requiring heavier locomotives and more exposure to night passages near Shepherdstown. Some doubt the plan but it will be tried, with train 14 lateness likely. Town Meeting on rate discussions for Shepherdstown Light and Water Company led to claims that rates cannot yet be lowered. officers noted long-term dividends, no salaries except for key staff, and income covering running costs and debts. The Register advertises two end-floor rooms formerly a dentist’s office for rent.
