The Remarkable Jersey Storekeeper Outsmarted
A New Jersey general storekeeper known for stocking anything a customer might ask for accepts a challenge to stump him. A visitor asks for an oak pulpit, the keeper offers to fetch from stock or order, then reveals a secondhand pulpit bought from church trustees for fifty dollars, setting a bet that the visitor pays ten dollars plus dinner if he can outwit him. The Jersey man later parries a similar test in New York, learning about floor walkers and oxen in unexpected departments, while a companion notes that country folk can be clever and quick-witted in such bets.
