Objections to the present game law grow as opponents urge repeal by the Legislature. They argue state punishment funds fines and game wardens are misused and that shipping game out of state harms mountaineers who rely on wild meat. They say hunting clubs influence strict limits, hurting locals who depend on woods for taxes and subsistence.
Detective David Williams, from Huntington, arrested Wesley Thompson in Cadetsburg Ky for murder of Howell after a long pursuit in a dangerous region. Williams posed as a mountain preacher, held revival meetings to coax Thompson into surrender, then cuffed him after his capture. Jon D. Rockefeller donated 1,250,000 dollars to Chicago charity, reaching 12,000,000 total.
A long, fragmentary column describes Montenegrin Christmas Eve customs aboard a hillside household. The head of the house and shepherd light candles, drive animals into the stable, and perform a wine sprinkling and head-kraze for luck. Other rites include sweeping fire tools, cryptic tucking of the Yule log, and a risky tradition of a burnt bump carried to the yard. The article also notes legends about witches and a burned foot ritual with a hearth cake and a foot-placing superstition. It touches on old Saxon legends and briefly mentions remedies for corns, a comment on Mrs. McKinley, and a theft involving a Persian bowl from Miss Marit Tearney.
