Test of Broad Culture Sparks Controversy Over Epworth List
A columnist criticizes the Epworth League’s vote on the ten greatest men of all time. He notes Edison first, Roosevelt second, Shakespeare third, with others including Longfellow, Tennyson, Hoover, Dickens, Emerson, Pershing, and an unnamed American in tenth. He decries the response of federal office staff and laments perceived American narrowness in history and culture.
