Virginia bonds priority over canal payments upheld

The Virginia Court of Appeals ruled certain Chesapeake and Ohio Canal bonds of 290 000 dollars backed by the state have priority over other debts. The Board of Public Works reports total liability around 417 500 dollars with substantial payments already made. Virginia previously paid 102 120 dollars and may be authorized to set aside 874 813 dollars of preferred claims against the canal company for counsel fees.
