A letter from Alexander Roteler of Shepherdstown announces his independent bid for Congress in the 2nd District of West Virginia. He states he will withdraw if the Republican Party gains a nomination during the district primaries. The notice is dated July 2, 1872 in Shepherdstown.
An August 17, 1872 reunion of Confederate veterans at Shepherdstown is described with scenes of parade, a Marseillaise performance by the band, Major Douglas’s conciliatory address praising past valor and urging peace, and a formal notice reading orders for detachment officers to report to the adjutant.
