Police comb the nation for a suspected murderer while Betty Verner is connected to activity at a Chicago cell. The report, by H. J. Gibbons, notes investigations expanding across jurisdictions.
The story recounts the outlaw Iikin a famed killer who has killed seven men and escaped police using his ingenuity. Betty Werner a 14 year old girl once saved him during a police pursuit in which Durkin shot a prohibition agent and killed a policeman. Werner claims Durkin was kind yet feared by authorities and townspeople alike.
Weather notes indicate snow or rain and a drop in temperature with colder conditions tonight and Sunday. Northwest winds increase, with a strong cold wave in the northern regions and a wintry mix in the south.
Edward Garrick an Oshkosh painter pled guilty to stealing an expensive auto belonging to William Gabriel of Friendship and driving on county highways without consent. Judge Fowler sentenced Garrick to one to five years in the Green Bay Reformatory but suspended execution and granted parole on his promise to abstain from intoxicants.
Dr Harold E Blazer stands trial for murdering his mentally challenged daughter Hazel aged two as prosecutors present two letters claimed to reveal his fear of dying and leaving her. The defense plans to use the letters to show compassion and argue temporary insanity as the motive.
Noblesville Ind United Press reports a murder trial for D G Stephenson Karl Klenck and Earl Gentry where Judge Sparks warned spectators to stop anti Stephenson demonstrations and threatened to clear the courtroom. Witnesses testified about a dying declaration and alleged Klan ties as defense clashed with the state.
Excavation has begun at Kohler for a new five story and basement factory to manufacture brass fittings including lavatory faucets traps drains and bath cocks. The 80 by 200 foot reinforced concrete building will house storage foundry machining buffing nickel plating and assembly areas with completion expected in six months. Continuous production will supply Kohler Enamel Ware and Kohler Vitreous Ware to trade. Vitreous Ware is already made at the recently bought Trenton New Jersey plant.
A UPI report from Sault Ste. Marie Michigan states the crew of seven aboard the barge J. L. Crane including Captain Richard Griggs are presumed dead after the barge broke from the steamer Hettler in Lake Superior and foundered near Whitefish Point during yesterday's storm. Coast guard crews from Crisp Point and Vermilion search the south shore for wreckage and bodies.
Thirteen of 74 witnesses subpoenaed for the court martial of Colonel William Mitchell were examined. Prominent on the list were Mrs. Zachary Lansdowne, widow of the Shenandoah commander, Major General Amon A. Fries, Lieut. Col. Gerald C. Brant, and majors Reed Chambers and Carl Spatz.
